Mr. Berry is a warrior. The official statements say that he heard the roar of the crowd and insisted on coming out. Great respect to the man at how he gave a detailed account of the event to the fans. Then does the heel scoop with air guitar.

This is probably a good idea of what will happen sooner rather than later with Keith or Ronnie...what a shame. Chuck really should have stayed retired.

Scary! hope all goes well.

...and skip those thight schedules for heavens sake - that's just too much for nearly anyone.

Berry flew into Chicago after performing two New Year’s Eve shows at B.B. King’s Blues Club and Grill in New York City.

Presumably, that's how he likes it.

Remember that European tour from a couple of years ago?
That schedule had him criss-crossing the continent a few times in a matter of just a couple of weeks.

Yes I remember it well. I even posted a google-map-zig-zag-pic of that tour. 't was bizzare.
I guess he doesn't listen to good advice.

Makes me think he just haphazardly books gigs anywhere at any time.

I hope CBII comes on here and posts a comment or two.

Chuck Berry (sort of) speaks (but not exactly)
December 30, 2010|By Allison StewartSpecial to the Tribune
Chuck Berry right now

There's nothing new, you know.

The thing about Chuck Berry, he's 84 years old, he's strong as an ox. There's this park in the St. Louis area — he's out making a cement path right now. Pushing a wheelbarrow, rolling the cement.

He's incredible.

One of the reasons he doesn't like talking to the press is he feels there's a lot of untrue stories out there.

There's also a lot of things that he's done in his life he'd rather not broadcast and go back and back over it.

Chuck back then

When we (met) he had just had "Maybellene," which was his first big-selling record. He was not a teenager at that time. This was '55. When "Maybellene" came out, he was [almost] 30. For some reason, he was able to capture the feeling of high schoolers.

I was asked to do a lot for him on television in the early days. "The Steve Allen Show," "Hullabaloo," all of those early shows who for the most part only played the white guys: Frankie Avalon, Fabian.

If Chuck had been a white pretty boy. … There's only one Elvis per generation, but he could have made more movies like a Frankie Avalon did, he could have had a TV series like an Andy Williams did.

That time the young Rolling Stones were Berry's opening act

I booked Chuck in Europe and what would happen in the early '60s in Europe is American R&B was the hot thing with the English kids. We would play 500-, 800-, 1,000-seat places. The promoter would (want to) put on an English act to open. Sometimes I knew them, sometimes I didn't. … I don't remember (the show itself). I don't know if Chuck remembers. Keith (Richards) remembers. Keith says it was, so I'll go with Keith.

Chuck on the road

Mostly he just likes to go by himself. He usually takes his bass player with him and he goes out. The shows are wonderful. He's one of these natural entertainers. There's a real downside if someone gives you a bad band. But he'll fire the band right onstage and then go and do the entire show accompanying himself on guitar. That doesn't happen much, thank goodness.

Chuck's demands are very specific, which is very good. You know how and why he wants (something) and you get it done the way he wants it. When that happens, he's the easiest act on the road. He doesn't want the dressing room with 8,000 bottles of wine and brandy. He don't want three rooms decorated. He just says, "Give me my amp, give me a clean dressing room close to the stage" … and that's it.

Definition of a joke starts with it being remotely 'funny'.....

Exactly and Skip was hardly funny. best wishes to Chuck. We would'nt want to see ANYBODY collapse on stage.

I hope Chuck will recover fully soon. If anyone can live to 100 it's him. By the way I also consider him to be "The King".
