One of the great drum intros ever, lots of energy - fantastic song. I love the stereo version as well.

I've never cared for the live versions that they've done.

Great song. The stereo (studio) version is interesting as the two guitars become separated...rough rhythm guitar and that thin repeated lead line. Only knowing the mono version all these years I have always wondered what the high-pitched notes were, almost bell-like or a little like a harmonica or something. Only in stereo (or "true stereo") do you realise it's a guitar.

yeah, but it's too bad that the stereo version has become standard on radio, etc.--or at least it was for years when the first wave of CDs were produced. It's tracks like this that make you understand why mono is preferable for most '60s material. The track just sounds weaker with the guitars isolated.

I agree that the mono version has more impact

I like the 75/76 "funky" live version connected with "If You can't Rock Me". Heavy riffs from Keith and a good lead from Ronnie.

Great exhilarating track. So full of energy and defiance. Part II of Satisfaction with the rejection of materialistic driven advertising. Great dense song where the instruments seem to be fighting to be heard, and Jagger bravely singing with such speed and attitude. LOVE IT! I especially like the medley on Love You Live, so funky!

Yes, couldn't agree more. This song is a work of genius, and I don't use that word lightly. The lyrics, the melody, the guitars, everything about it is sheer perfection. Most remarkable of all, perhaps, is Charlie's propulsive drumming.

A flawless gem.

Drew

P.S. How sad to realize that "Flip the Switch" (which I just reviewed) is the same band doing the same "high energy and defiance" thing thirty-two years later, but putting them side by side it's like comparing a Ferrari Testarossa with a Hyundai.

A fantastic '45' from my youth, with the London label spinning around on the turntable and those dynamite drums.

I actually like the live versions better. Same with Satisfaction. I never listen to the original studio recordings of GOOMC and ICGKS anymore.

They always play Satisfaction too fast on stage, no groove. Only good live version I've heard is on the Leeds boot.

Drummers like that play much better with their hands tied behind their backs.

Listen to the track I posted on the Tracking Cookie - live in Honolulu, 1966, and that lead guitar line stands out a mile. Brian?

That's Brian on lead. The official 1965 video for this track clearly shows Brian playing the lick.

Yes, Brian...a talent lost...

I agree about the live versions of GOOMC (namely '66/'67) - faster and more rockin'. The studio version was always too "sing-songy" to my ears.

Actually, what I wanted was to do it slow like a Lee Dorsey thing. We rocked it up. I thought it was one of Andrew Loog Oldham's worst productions."

He eventually did a slow version with Alexis Korner, Frampton & Hopkins.
Great version, including the Richards vocal cameo.
Don't know if the take on CD is as complete as the LP though.

Can't stand the versions they do of this song on stage now. This song is not a slowed down stroll in the park. It's fast and hard and keening.

One of Charlie's best songs. Really a great song. This is NOT a pop song!

It should be noted that the repeated high pitch guitar line by Brian was played on a 12 string electric guitar. smiling smiley

Personally, I think the Honolulu 1966 and Paris 1967 versions trump the studio version.

His Majesty - You can really hear that high pitched twelve string on the stereo versions that have come out.

Get Off Of My Cloud
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, September 5, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, handclaps
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar
Ian Stewart - piano

Yeah, I live on an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home looking out the window imagining the world has stopped
Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack
And says: I've won five pounds if I have this kind of detergent pack

I said: Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud, hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud, baby

Yeah, the telephone is ringing, I say: Hi, it's me, who is there on the line?
A voice says: Hi, hello, how are you, well, I guess I'm doin' fine
He says: It's three a.m., there's too much noise, don't you people ever wanna go to bed
Just 'cause you feel so good, do you have to drive me out of my head?

I said: Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud, hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud, baby

Yeah, I was sick and tired, fed up with this and decided to take a drive downtown
It was so very quiet and peaceful, there was nobody, not a soul around
I laid myself out, I was so tired and I started to dream
In the morning the parking tickets were just like flags stuck on my windscreen

I said: Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud, hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud

Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around baby, two's a crowd on my cloud

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Get Off Of My Cloud / I’m Free” 7” single
(London 9792) US, September 25, 1965

If there is ONE song that made me a fan of this band with IMMEDIATE effect, it was this one. First heard it in 1968 when I was 13 years old, sounds as good today as it did then. An absolute peach of a song, adore it. WHAT a joy it was to see/hear them open with it LIVE in the year 2012.

[ If you don't believe what I'm singing, at three o'clock in the morning, babe, well I'm singing my song for you ]

It has become the absolute embarrassment now. 1975 and 1976 was the peak.

No doubt one of the greatest rock songs ever by any band - everything about it.
In my top 10 favorite Stones songs.

One of my favorite Stones tracks of all time. Charlie starts it off with a great drum intro followed by Keith hitting it hard on rhythm guitar with a firm backing by Bill. Brian highlights it with lead guitar playing his Rick 12 string. Mick takes it home with his cynical vocals. When Bill said they were the sum of five equal parts this song must have come to mind. Great all around tune. I like both versions stereo and mono. It"s nice to hear Brian's lead guitar in the stereo mix. To bad the stereo version wasn't mixed a little better. Brian and Keith's guitars could have been balanced a little differently. It's ironic. The mono Keith's guitar sticks out. In the stereo Brian's does. This song could have used a balance like the guitars on It's All Over Now where they were equal and in the forefront throughout the song. This was a real shit kicker for 1965.
