"The whole film is more a study about the athmosphere and spirit of the early sixties in Ireland at the time when the stones played there than about the group itself. Apart from a few interviewes (one with each member)it goes on and on about the opinion of the fans. And during the whole film you don't hear one single song from the Stones! You really have to be a "hardcore-fan" to enjoy this." Amazon.com

WELL...I for one am a hard core fan. I'M GOING!

I'm leaving shortly, but I already went to the theatre and bought my ticket.

I have an early day tomorrow...oh well. I've never seen the movie and would love to see ALO do the intro.

I'll tell you how it all goes...tomorrow!

I just asked Andrew Loog Oldham what his favourite Stones Albums are...

...during the 'Andrew' period, and post-Andrew.

His response was Between the Buttons, Flowers and Aftermath for the Andrew period, and Some Girls 'post Andrew'.

He then mentioned something about 'slim pickens' but said he also liked Stripped.

Very cool guy and able to share a lot of info.

I'm very tired and will post some more tomorrow.

Could you please ask him if he was the responisble person-in-charge for putting the US albums together?

I think it is a common misunderstanding that he only put the together the UK versions.

I would like to find out why they got rid of Oldham. He was a pretty decent producer, based on the Stones' output during his time with them.

In my opinion, Satanic Majesties was a disaster. Maybe Oldham would have saved the Stones from themselves on that album.

Jimmy Miller was an entirely different entity. Miller was an amazing musician . . I don't even know if Oldham could play the piano.

As for the post-Jimmy MIller era . .that speaks for itself. I think it isn't as good, but others disagree. Supposedly the Stones "took" all of Miller's great ideas and didn't need him anymore . or didn't listen to him anymore.

Wow! Oldham was a terrific producer? He did hardly anything! And most of their early albums sound like crap, and the few tracks that sound good were "produced" by in house Decca engineers. Oldham was a great image man, but didn't know his way around a recording studio at all.

The best sounding tracks from the early days were the ones recorded at Chess. 12x5 sound amazing.

That may be taking it too far. Oldham worshiped Phil Spector, and some of Spector's techniques rubbed off on him. Admittedly he didn't even know what mixing was on his first Stones session, but he was a quick learner.

Tele, I'm currently on the border of Russian Hill/North Beach and I love it--the vast views of Alcatraz, the crazy hills, the wild parrots squawking outside the window, the vibe of North Beach when it's just regulars/locals--aimed to be in the Mission but couldn't find a furnished short-term apt that accepts pets. Hope to move out here permanently - X fingers that it works out cuz it feels like a kindred city. smiling smiley (sorry treaclefingers to be biding the time til you return by talking to Tele!)

That's a great part of town, Swiss. The Italian restaurants in North Beach are amazing. I have a good friend on Powell. Maybe we could meet up next time I am there. Cheers.

Charlie Is My Darling was going to be officially released on DVD last year. Anyone know what happened?

It was released, how official it was I don't know.

Good Lord, he's still milking this one? He did this a few years back. Saw him in Glasgow. The movie was fun and good to see on a big screen. I'm afraid Mr Oldham came across as a pretentious bore and some of us preferred to discuss the movie in a pub than listen to his self aggrandizement.

All the bad stuff was Andrew Loog Oldham's and all the good stuff was because of the Decca engineers? lol Right.

Let's get those Decca engineers back and maybe the Stones will produce their first great album in 35 years. What are their names?

YEs, so right Tele. That is true. But I don't think Oldham really had much to do with the producing...I think he participated, but he was very limited in his understanding of the production and engineering, and mechanics of using a studio... And yes you are right, especially on the first few albums. By Now the sound was much better, and that one was done at the Chess studios... So yes, my statement was a bit too far:-) Hey! When you leaving for Laos? What is the plan, itinerary??

Flying into Bangkok Oct. 19, taking the train to Vientiane the next night. Then 2 nights Vientiane and probably about five in LP? What do you recommend seeing?

I spent five or six days in LP a few months ago and you can see all the main sights easily in that time with no rush - it's a seriously chilled out place (or at least it was at that time of the year)! Your side mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go into a fancy craft gallery called Lao Caruso on the main drag Sisavangvong, go to the back of the store and look on the windowsill on your right for a surprise. And make sure to ask the people in the gallery about it. OK??!!
