Lyrics by Keith

I wanted to start this thread about Keith songs where he has written the music and the lyrics or maybe just the lyrics... I know Ruby Tuesday its 100 % Richards creation. Any more lyrics out there by Keith? I suspect Rocks Off to be his too.

Have a good weekend

I guess we know he wrote the ones he sings. Its more interesting to ponder the words Mick sings which Keith wrote....and whether Keith "set him up" - Had it with you??

Let It Loose

When I listen to Let It Loose, I sometimes wonder if Keith wrote that about Mick and Bianca. "Who's that woman on your arm, all dressed up to do you harm" etc. What do you guys think?

I never heard that Ruby Tuesday was written by Keith? Was it? Or maybe you meant Connection?

Does anyone have any evidence for Keith writing the Gimme Shelter lyrics? I thought he wrote them too, but I've never actually read anything that confirms this.

He wrote the choruses to Satisfaction, Angie, Wild Horses, maybe Beast of Burden. Mick filled in the rest though...

Mick wrote the lyrics for Gimme Shelter. I never heard that he wrote the lyrics for Let it loose?
What interests me more is if Keith really wrote all the lyrics to the songs that he sings. I donĀ“t think that this is necessarily the case.

Mick wrote the lyrics for Gimme Shelter.

I doubt it; there's early tapes of this song with Keith singing and musing about gimme shelter etc

I'd say they both wrote parts of the words

keith also wrote words to Happy, obviously

I'd read somewhere here that Keith wrote Beast of Burden completely.

Iirc "Who's that woman on your arm all dressed up to do you harm" was a missile directed to Bianca.
And I assume "Short & Curlies" is another KR song...
"Too bad she's got you by the balls You can't get free at all"

I see a pattern here... grinning smiley

Jagger talks about songwriting with Jann Wenner on Rolling Stone Jagger Remembers Interview.... very good interview. He talks about how in the early days Keith wrote the music and the melodies and he wrote the words ... he mentions Ruby Tuesday and how he had nothing to with either the words or the music.

I think he wrote a lot of lyrics when composing a song but most are rewritten by Mick except a few of them

I always wonder about songs where he joins in to sing the chorus. I think he probably wrote some of those? I think of Dead Flowers, Wild Horses to name a couple??

gimme shelter-keith said he wrote the lyrics and music himself.waiting for mick to finish filming performance

Gimme Shelter:
"Gimmie Shelter is a classic (example of a song where the music and words came together). That, I just slapped down on a cassette while waiting for Mick to finish Performance." -- Keith

Angie:
"The basic melody and the title were mine." -- Keith
"I had the whole chord sequence down maybe a year ago with just the title Angie. It could have been Randy or Mangy or anything, you know, but Mick just picked up on the title and wrote a song around it." -- Keith

"That was one of Keith's songs (laughs). I just filled in the gaps." -- Mick

Beast of Burden:
"This was another one where Mick just filled in the verses. With the Stones, you take along a song, play it and see if there are any takers. Sometimes they ignore it, sometimes they grab it and record it. " -- Keith

"How it works on a tune like Beast of Burden is Keith would set up a chord sequence and maybe one or two lines, and then you've got to extemporize on that, and come up with these melody lines and lyrics. " -- Mick

Let it Loose:
"(Who's that woman on your arm/All dressed up to do you harm?) I think Keith wrote that, actually. That's a very weird, difficult song. I had a whole other set of lyrics to it, but they got lost by the wayside. I don't think that song has any semblance of meaning. It's one of those rambling songs. I didn't really understand what it was about, after the event." -- Mick

I remember an interview with Mick where he said most of the lyrics for Before They Make Me Run were by him but most of the lyrics for Beast of Burden were Keith's. Interesting.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that I Got The Blues was one of Keith's.
