Rocky, I copied your text because, well, you basically said what I was going to say, but I added to it:

Jumpin' Jack Flash, Sympathy For The Devil, Midnight Rambler and Street Fighting Man on GET YER YA-YA'S OUT

Honky Tonk Women, IORR and You Can't Always Get What You Want on LOVE YOU LIVE

When the Whip Comes Down on SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES

Under My Thumb, Time Is On My Side and Just My Imagination on STILL LIFE

Start Me Up on FLASHPOINT

You Got Me Rocking on NO SECURITY (ha ha)

And if it wasn't hacked apart edited so bad I'd almost say Brown Sugar from LIVE LICKS.

I nearly almost prefer the "original" studio versions to their live material!

Only few exceptions like Midnight Rambler come to my mind now.
Ahh, Streets of love from lately.

Yeah, and they always do great Berry renditions of course!

But, - while I often get bored or can't listen to their live versions anymore; I still always get a buzz when a Stones studio tune comes on radio!
Even if it's stuff like Miss you, etc., - all those studio versions are great and make me feel good when suddenly playin on the car radio.

It's funny because the Stones have always been a good live band too. So of course there is a lot of great live stuff and I love some of those live versions, but in the end I nearly always prefer the original studio songs!

Have to think of more exceptions . .

Funny, because I have it the exact opposite way

There's only a couple of ones of which no live version could match the studio version.

But in many of those (few) cases....it's because they played the song very seldom (like Loving Cup or Tops) or that they didn't perform it live before WAY later (like Sway and Can't You Hear Me Knockin)

I like the faster LIVE version of LET ME GO....I wish the studio version was faster.

2nd that...I heard the Still Life version first, didn't pick up Emotional Rescue until years later...the studio version falls flat by comparison.

Angie from Brussels...kills the studio version.
Out of Control & Saint of Me...from No Security.
Miss You from Flashpoint.
Love In Vain...69 tour was great, but the version from Ladies & Gentlemen is stellar

Factory Girl from Flashpoint
Bitch...from 1972 tour.

Just My Imagination

2000 Light Years From Home...

As far as the golden era is concerned I don't think the songs actually sounded better live as in their original recordings. Just different. Namely, for example, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Sympathy For the Devil", "Honky Tonk Women" or "Street Fighting Man" are just arranged differently and they sound different but I think the original recordings are just perfect as they are (diffuclt to think them any better). In live surroundings the acoustic guitars are turned to electric, and the songs are more guitar-driven than some originals but the originals are works of genious as far the studio work goes. For example, I don't hear any live version of "Sympathy" having Jagger present and nuancing the phrases and singing the melody so tastely as he does in the original. The same goes for "Honky Tonk" or "Jack Flash" (and I cannot think the guitar sound and touch Keith has in original "Honky Tonk" being more in target as it is there.)

I think the only cut from BEGGARS/BLEED period is "Love in Vain" that I think really can be said to have developed to better spheres in live (I can see the argument going for "Midnight Rambler" as well, but I think there is some earthy, capturing, dark, contemplative atmoshpere in the original that makes it unique; I still am not sure if the definitive live version - Brussells '73 - is actually better than the original.) Also the recordings of STICKY and EXILE are so perfect per se that I can not think the songs being played any better live - and those were songs they didn't need much to re-arrange to make them work live. For example, I love the fast-driven, rocking "Brown Sugar" as the 1972/73 concert opener but still I find the original single version in its groovy, lazy tempo as the true masterpiece and a work of genious.

But of the songs that I think actually have worked better live as originals is SOME GIRLS rockers, officially (SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES) released "When The Whip Comes Down" being a good example. HANDSOME GIRLS brings the point home.

(Hmm... there is another observation I have made; if certain songs are quite mediocre/bad/awful an sich, then if the band being in a hot mood, they could make them better as originals: think of "Dancin with Mr. D", "Dance Little Sister" or, say, "Streets of Love"...)

I can think of four...

Midnight Rambler on GET YER YA-YA'S OUT
Hot Stuff on LOVE YOU LIVE
When the Whip Comes Down on SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES
Just My Imagination on STILL LIFE

I'll go with those too, but from Still Life I just HAVE to add Under My Thumb to your list. That version just NAILS it something special for me, love it.
