Been in circulation for a few years, although thats the first time I've heard it.

It's better than the version with Jagger IMO.

Interesting to hear this and thanks for posting.

I actually think the vocal arrangement is quite repetitive and boring...Michael probably spent more time with Mick developing the 'back and forth banter' that makes the song more interesting.

I also don't think that Freddie particularly 'stood out' from Michael enough. Maybe there is a bigger dichotomy between Michael & Mick's voices, than Freddie & Michael.

Clearly Freddie is technically a stronger singer than Mick could ever dream of being...that said, I prefer the original because they actually DO MORE in the vocals. It's also grittier/dirtier, which makes the overall song more interesting.

I think Freddie's talent was wasted on this.

what makes you think that? I'd imagine they weren't even in the studio together.

I thought mick had written this song... so he performed it at Live Aid having only sang on it, and as a back-up choice?

An interesting version.
Just looking at the photos of Freddie and Michael. What great performers they were.
Managed to see Freddie and Queen at Elland road stadium in 82,and Michael at his first gig in Bangkok in 93.
Both rank in the top 3 showmen of all time.Sir Mick leading the field.
Thanks for posting.

They did record it together, in New York in May 1984. (Jackson was quoted later as having made a snipey comment at Mick's lack of vocal prowess in his first few takes). The song was written by Michael Jackson and Randy Hansen. Not Mick Jagger.

I remember reading that Jacko made Mick do a series of vocal scales before recording because he sang flat. Or something to that effect.

Whacko telling Mick Jagger that he had a lack of vocal prowess. Telling the man who sang Get Off My Cloud, Midnight Rambler, Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Crazy Mama, Hang Fire and Brown Sugar, all songs that have huge vocal "prowess" among a few others, of course, that his vocals lacked prowess?

Michael Jackson? A man who's range was stuck in the 'my balls are being squeezed by a giant' range and would rather say 'hee hee' than anything else?

Hee hee - that's funny!

Well I was being charitable...if they weren't even in the studio together, then this Freddie version REALLY BLOWS.

Maybe - but he evidently wasn't referring to those performances. Its not like Mick's vocals are or were always pitch perfect.

So the story goes, Jagger came in to do his vocal and sang the song absolutely flat. Jacko's reported comment (dont know who he said it to) was along the lines of 'How did HE ever get to be a star?'

Mick obviously got it to Jackos' satisfaction in the end, otherwise it wouldnt have ever been released.

As much as I dislike Michael Jackson (and also feel sorry for him), he was an excellent singer...Mick could never hope to be that good.

THAT SAID, Mick is the archetypal Rock vocalist...his interpretation/phrasing/creativity are amazing. His later years see some of that slipping away, but I'm not 'bothered' by it the way some people are.

As you can see, I love this song so much, it's my namesake. smiling smiley

And IMO, Jagger's version is light years better than Mercury's (RIP Freddie)

SO...'dancing with Billy on the piano' really WAS a homoerotic reference, fitting in well with Ronnie Wood being 'gay' and of course, er, 'bums rush jagger'.
