Rolled Gold; THE BEST COMPILATION

Just finished listening to this.

I know it's just "another" money grab for ABKCO, but I think this is just the best Stones compilation covering the sixties.

It FAR outpasses both Hot Rocks compilations. It's much more consistent.

It's also giving you a better look at the Stones overall than The Singles Collection.

The vinyl - which has less tracks; would be my favourite compilation - and such excellent artwork, especially the back-cover
Rolled Gold Plus does have a nicer selection of songs ( =more songs), but I grew up with the 2LPvinyl

Yes - it's probably the best compilation.

Forty Licks is horrible I think....you can't force 4 decades of Rolling Stones best outputs into a double CD....you only get a glimpse of what they did every 2nd year. Lousy artwork as well

I agree.
BUT! My favourite is the original with less songs.
The perfect compilation of the 60's Stones.

Back in it's day High Tide was a dog floggin' knock-out but it's gotta be
the UK release even though it came out some 8---9 months after the US Tide...
The UK is THE KILLER...And And Classic cover and the booklet shots just threw ya a friggin' mile.........

I bought that compilation in 1976 and it was instrumental in getting me hooked on the Rolling Stones. The songs are compiled chronologically I believe, which creates an impressive changing musical flow when played in its entirety;it shows how musically creative and daring the young Rolling Stones were in the 60's.

It's from Lyceum Theatre, London 12/21/69....or was it Saville? One of them anyway. No Swiss shows in 1970, btw

Yeah, I'd go along with Rolled Gold being the best, too. The Stones made some fabulous music in the 70's, but they are a 60's group and this compilation is the best summery of that most magical of decades. The decade in which he Rolling Stones really mattered the most.

I bought this on cassette when I was very young and getting into the Stones.
Like other people in this thread say, I grew up on this comp too! ...It was also the first time I heard Gimme Shelter, and I remember that song stood out like a thunderbolt from all the others on this tape for some reason. It seemed like all the tracks in the compilation were leading towards a menacing conclusion. In other words, quite an apt summary of the sixties as experienced by the Stones.

Yes it was discussed before I remember. Why did I write Dec 14th ? I meant the 21st.
Great photo anyway; it even has Bill Wyman in the front...not too common for official photos.

It's a very popular release in the U.K. at least, you can see it on the Top 100 right now at #95:

I prefer the original compilation with less songs. I don't like Tell Me but the new RG+ is ok. It has Wild Horses and Brown Sugar.

SFM and SFTD were out of sequence on the original so not quite chronlogical.

I bought the new LP, called "Rolled Gold +" , 40 songs on a whopping 4 album set!

Too perfect to even open. There is also a USB/SD Card version of this, in cool packaging, that I picked up on EBAY for a song.

I wonder how many ways you can repackage the old stuff, and people will STILL buy it?

Yesterday's Papers?

If they wanted a deep cut off BTB, I would have preferred 'Connection', or even 'Back Street Girl'.

There´s also a Rolled Gold II:

1. Route 66
2. Little By Little
3. Around And Around
4. You Better Move On
5. Under The Boardwalk
6. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love
7. Suzie-Q
8. Off The Hook
9. The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man
10. Heart Of Stone
11. Talkin' Bout You
12. I'm Free
13. Mother's Little Helper
14. Dandelion
15. 2000 Light Years From Home
16. No Expectations
17. Stray Cat Blues
18. You Can't Always Get What You Want
19. Let It Bleed
20. Little Queenie

And a japanese variation:

I don´t have the japanese, so I´m not sure about the songlist.

Rolled Gold ll was a west german release only.

I also have Rolled Gold + on 4 disc vinyl. It's perfect. Can't get a better vinyl comp. of early Stones.

Yep, you´re right, it came out in 1980. The Rolled Gold + vinyl is nice, altough I never played it. However, I´ve got 4 copies of the original release, one can´t be played anymore, more or less, since I played the shit out of it when it was released drinking smiley. The Rolled Gold II is nice, and I think a bit rare nowadays. I got my 2 copies when they were originally released, but I hardly see them on the usual auction sites. It´s a nice companion to the original.
A little trivia: The so called jake box used for the re-release of Rolled Gold CD is a first, and a swedish invention. Have´nt seen it since, though.

For me, everything began with ROLLED GOLD.

Around 1980, I, 17 years old, was a hardcore Beatles fan.

On Dez. 25th 1981 my sister gave me a copy of RG on music cassete, a Christmas gift for me.

The song order was wrong, it begann with GOOMC.

That was a turning point in my life...
