STILL LIFE vinyl thread

A great live album if you consider there were no official live LP from 78 tour and if you compare to the very over produced Flashpoint.

I have been listening to Still Life during many years in the car on cassette only.

Here is my japan promo edition in mint condition with Obi, lyrics sheet.

Always found the 2 first numbers coming over very strong.

But as a whole album it is not that great!

I listen to Hampton too a lot and watch it regularely since we have an excellent Jointrip edition.
The Still Life lenght can be justified as a rush of energy coming out promptly.

I was totally blown by the music a n d the looks
of those guys, especially the one third from the right
in the foldout. Best picture of Keith, ever.

One of the worst Stones live albums ever. It should have been called Lifeless. Absolutely no balls.

It could have been so much better!

Great tour, piss poor album - except for Under My Thumb, which is visceral.

Played it to death when it was released in the summer of ´82.
Still like still life.
It started to pale when I got to know the Hampton ´81 show...
And the opening tunes ( as in the LSTNT movie, although taken from a different show )
are incredible !

By the way :

Never got to know why the first minute of the Hampton show trainwrecked :
Is it just me,the broadcast or whatever what makes the opening riffs of
Under My Thumb almost unlistenable ?

I have the entire Hampton show. This album should have been longer and featured more from Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. This was what the tour was about. the last real fruitful period when the new releases were vital and the Stones were a real working band.

Always loved the album, although it now gets rarely played after I discovered the wonders of bootlegs such as Hampton, Phoenix etc.

The UK vinyl pressing is my favorite, more meaty sounding than the US versions I've heard. None of the Cd releases have ever come close either in my opinion, it's always way too bright sounding.

Always loved this album, Bill's bass playing, KR's solo in UMT...

I used to have the vinyl but now only have it as MP3 downloads and I agree the mix is too bright. I've been thinking of copying these to a tape deck then recording back to MP3s again..might give it a softer/warmer sound.

There is a lot to criticize about this release, especially Mick's overly athletic vocals (i.e. he was too out of breath to sing well most of the time), but really, it has a very unique sound overall, and I love the opening sequence, even if the crowd noise is exaggerated. I really hope there is a dvd re-issue of the LSTNT film.

i bought the picture disc back in the day - unfortunately it sounds the same as the pictureless disc...

this was at the time i first started finding bootlegs - some of my first live vinyl bootlegs were of the '81 Hampton show and the '78 King Biscuit show ... I thought those bootlegs were far superior than Still Life and I listened to those way more than Still Life.

i know you're referring to the content & not the audio quality.....but i think (in general)
the audio quality of picture disks sucks compared to non-picture disks.

i think my first impression (as a relatively young Stones fan at the time) was that the
Stones '81-'82 LIVE sound nothing like the Stones in the Studio.......so even, though some
call '89-'90 the "Vegas" Stones...I thought musically they proved that they could
get it together and sound more like the original recordings.

I too listened more to bootlegs of that era than Still Life. Watched the movie often too.

Under My Thumb, LSTNT, Shattered, Going To A Go Go, Let Me Go and Satisfaction have never been played better again. That´s 6 songs our of 10. Piss Poor live album?? Nah, not in my opinion...

always been an issue of what's not on it more than what is on it - the album simply doesn't represent their last true rock'n'roll tour....too many missing highlights...and in one instance (JMI), it edits the guts of the song out. with the plethora of quality boots from this tour that widely circulate there is simply no compelling reason to play this record.

I got my first 81 tour boots almost ten years later (LP on the Philadelpiha opening - awful sound quality, and a superb duble CD mix of Hampton + someother concert), so by the time I got into boots, I also was in love with the original release.

Same with Love You Live: bad edits and overdubs and all, I love them for what they are!
