12 songs you first heard on the radio that stopped you dead in your tracks

A lot of this will depend on how old you are, of course .... I'm 55 ..... and I could easily have kept going and made it 20 or 30. But, for simplicity's sake, think of twelve songs that you first heard coming over your radio that stopped you dead in your tracks. Whatever you had been doing was now suddenly not as important, suddenly you now had to hear this record again. Maybe you even went out and bought it at the local J.C. Penney's that very day.

Here's mine:

1. It’s All Over Now – STONES
2. Eight Days a Week – BEATLES
3. Satisfaction – STONES
4. Jumpin’ Jack Flash – STONES
5. Hey Jude – BEATLES
6. Light My Fire – DOORS
7. Hungry – PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS
8. Black Dog – LED ZEPPELIN
9. You Really Got Me – KINKS
10. Call Me Lightning – WHO
11. Dock of the Bay – OTIS REDDING
12. Tin Soldier – SMALL FACES

What's yours?

When I was 13 I stayed over at a friend's house. We stole a bottle of champagne and went out ransacking the neighborhood. Then about 4 or 5 a.m. I heard Sympathy for the Devil and Riders on the Storm both for the first time. I had never been up that late before, and it gave me a deep, lifelong love for both tunes.

I can't think of 12 off the bat, but last year I went through a tough and sudden spilt after 14 years of marriage. One song started the pull away from the bad feelings I was having, it was an epiphany to me. Parked in my car (cound't see the road from the tears) - this song dove into my heart in a furious rush, feeling the healing immediately.

Gimme Sympathy - METRIC

It changed the way I think about music. I'm listening to good current music now, so many good indie bands out there making stuff better than regular radio. They were my gateway band into hope. Metric pulled me out of something bad and into something new, fresh and exciting. And to top it off, they're also Canadian.

Well I always heard the Stones on record first since my parents were fans, but these two songs grabbed me when I heard them in early 70's or so.

Baba O'Riley - The Who
Run Through The Jungle - CCR

Cocteau Twins- Carolyn's fingers
The Smiths- How soon is now?
The Cure- prayers for rain
Van Halen- eruption
Bebop Deluxe- adventures in a yorkshire landscape (live record)
Queen- bohemian rhapsody
Zep- live Dazed and Confused from TSRTS movie
The Who- won't get fooled again
Jimi Hendrix- are you experienced
Beatles- i am the walrus
Beatles- tomorrow never knows
The Chi-Lites- have you seen her? (which became my first 45rpm single)

i had a cute little cheap AM radio as a kid in the late '60's thru '73, when I started buying singles. Then we got a hand-me-down stereo (FM radio and record player through TWO speakers!! whole new world!!) from the parents and I started buying albums around 1975-76.

I don't think I can name 12 right away, but two that definitely stand out for me, on opposite ends of the spectrum, would be, on one hand, the first time I heard God Save the Queen by the Pistols in 1977 and, on the other, hearing the Yessongs version of Close to the Edge. Both I heard both on a crappy mono FM radio in New Jersey.

Blind Willie Johnson "Jesus Is Coming Soon".

I was a teenage (wannabee) jazz buff listening to UK jazzman Humphrey Littleton's weekly radio show (I guess about 1970) and he played this track. Blew me away, changed my musical direction (away from the trumpet towards a guitar) and my life!

Songs that I first heard on the radio (a few of them only once) that influenced me to go out and buy the CD

Roy Orbison - You Got It
George Harrison - Got My Mind Set On You
Godley & Creme - A Little Piece Of Heaven
Sophia George - Girlie Girlie
Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care

Later, when radio had gotten formatted and boring, these things happened only rarely:

Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra - Scorpio Rising - feat. Chris Difford
Frank Popp Ensemble - The Rural Assiduity

These days, I make those kind of discoveries with the background music people put on their youtube videos:

Salme Dahlstrom - Take It Off Baby

Stones 77, I can relate.....I was eleven years old in 1966, so my list could have also included:

Windy - THE ASSOCIATION (first band I ever saw in concert, in 1970)
Happy Together - TURTLES
Last Train to Clarksville - MONKEES
.... and several other less cool responses!

I guess part two of this thread would be:
"SONGS THAT MADE YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY THROW SOMETHING AT THE RADIO!"

Here's that list:

1. Elusive Butterfly of Love - BOB LIND (made you look around for an empty Dr. Pepper bottle to heave)
2. Honey - BOBBY GOLDSBORO
3. I Am Woman - HELEN REDDY
4. Feelings - MORRIS ALBERT
5. Tie a Yellow Ribbon - TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN
6. Take a Letter, Maria - A. C. GREAVES
7. We Built This City - STARSHIP (LOVED the Airplane, but this was trash)
8. One Bad Apple - OSMONDS
9. Rhinestone Cowboy - GLEN CAMPBELL

I think that's enough, I'm starting to not feel so well......

Ha ha...songs if I never hear again on the radio it will be too soon...

There's a lot. Stairway, Freebird, anything by Boston, Kansas or those other horrible bands of that way, like that horrible song that says 'I need a lover that won't drive me crazy'.
