Sir Craven of Cottage
First up I've been see Clapton live on 12 occasions. These shows cover a broad spectrum of styles and content and I will be the first to admit that one or two have been flat and uninspiring. But had the Stones followed his example they would be in a better place artistically than they have ended up in by following the Michael Cohl cash cow.
Since 1990 Eric Clapton has toured more frequently than the Stones. He plays smaller venues but has has varied his shows more infineitely than the Stones ever have. There have been orchestral nights, blues only tours, varying line ups, collaborations with The Impressions, BB King, Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck. If you stand up the Stones work from Steel Wheels and compare it to Clpaton's since Journeyman (both albums released in late 1989) then the Stones work compares very unfavourably.
Too late now. Clapton can go on for years following his path but when all we have to anticipate from the Stones is the re-release of an album from 1972 its seems they are in a cul de sac with the exit blocked off.
But the old blues guys NEVER ran around like that. So their premise wasn't that to begin with. The Stones' premise WERE. And they're still carrying on with that, just as the old blues guys carried on with theirs. Don't make the mistake that The Stones ARE blues guys. They're the 2nd rock generation that came AFTER the old blues guys. The case of Clapton is also different: Did he EVER run around the stage? No. He did not. So his premise was also different to that of The Stones. Seems like everyone keeps doing their thing right?Quote

So true, and yet another example of why the "the old blues guys did it/still do it, so the old rockers can too" argument just doesn't work with a band like the Stones. The reasons it works for Clapton is not just because of the above, but also because Eric isn't trying to run around the stage like it's the Some Girls tour of 78. the Stones are still trying to put on a show like they did 35 years ago and they look ridiculous doing it.
To be fair, Eric never did that kind of thing to begin with (and neither did Muddy, BB, Albert, Freddy, John Lee, etc.) but the fact remains that he does shows that fit where he is in his life and career (just like Muddy, BB, etc.). As of their last tour, the Stones don't. Even Keith knows this, with his recent can't run around in yellow tights forever remark.
The reason it worked for the old blues guys is that when they were 60+ years old they weren't carrying on like a bunch of damn idiots. That's great when your twenty, but not 40 years later.

... for some people the biggest mistake The Rolling Stones ever made is to be The Rolling Stones and not try to be like other groups or artists.
I hear those people still whining, almost 50 years now.
But I still like them: The Rolling Stones.

If Stones had worked together with Phil Collins like Eric Clapton did, I wouldn't have been a Stones fan anymore.
That was the biggest mistake artistically ever made.

actually Christina Aguilera was a nice act. they had their one time on stage for a song they've done a hundred times before so nothing musically she could ruin.
Timberlake and Alqueira have not produced Stones music.Quote

Yeah, it is more preferable and cooler to share the stage with Justin Timberlake, Christina Alqueira, and to back up one's ass with guns like Chuck Leavell, etc. ><

Collins did - fx. August (it was a big succes in UK though), but it sounds exactly like Collins with his drums, horns, synth etc.

While I agree to some extent - what are the great EC songs written in his career? or the last 15 yrs? Some - but not many (no compare to the Stones output/quality) - In interviews he indicates that his producers ID songs for his albums and (very surprisingly to me) He'll lay down multiple takes on recorded solos - then let the producer chop them together for the final. Compare that to M&K's involvement in writing/mixing/production decisions: where EC let's the pros take over, M&K get in fistfights over details of production etc. My point is just a totally different artistic sensibility.

agree 100%. he is no writer, no producer, no one who has an idea of a final product, he is a sideman that got luckily famous. this is why he has to rely on others to write for and produce him.
but comping solo takes is usual. they did it even in the tape 4 or 8 track days.
