I was there. I thought it wasn't great. The band was lackadasical. They were much better a few days earlier in Tucson. I think that was the show where I said "Festival seating? Never again". Peter Tosh and Etta James opened. Both enjoyable.

Great show--indeed--But got hurt --running and found a seat

i was there. some forget about the large # of topless women in front of the stage. even nicer than old shoes.

does anyone recall peter tosh tossing rolled joints into the audience.? i saw it.

how about the girth of etta james? wow.i didnt realize at the time as to how significant she is/was in her genre. and what a legend she is!

I recall that my girlfriend, friend and I were greeted at the "shoe show" by the Anaheim Police Department in full riot gear (in the parking lot). After a cop figured out that my friend had a can of beer in his pant leg, the cop pulled the cigarette pack out of my friend's shirt pocket, opened it up and literally began to drool and spit (inside of his riot helmet) as he pulled several joints out. He then demanded that my friend hand over his concert ticket (which he did) and the cop threatened him with arrest and tearing up his ticket. Ultimately, the officer returned the ticket and cigarette pack and allowed us to enter the show. My friend was so freaked out he just sat in his seat shaking for about the first 90 minutes of the show. The funny thing is that when he reached into his pack for a cigarette he discovered that the cop had left 2 or 3 joints in it! [I also saw the 73 Nicaragua benefit and one of the recent Hollywood Bowl shows with the same friend -- who died at age 54 in April, 2009 ... I miss him!]

As I recall, it was a hot day and people near the stage kept tossing various clothing items on to the stage. I think that Jagger was surprised when a shoe landed nearby & he just semi-jokingly said, "give me your shoes." And, as they say, the rest is history

This was in the punk or post-punk age. Even the Rolling Stones had to be sports, tough it out and take some abuse from the crowd. All show Jagger was amazing at dodging things. True, Orange County is not exactly the east end of London. At one point a frisbee went zinging by his head. Only a reflex dodge prevented him from getting nailed. I guess shoes were being thrown up as well. Finally, Jagger, tired of it (in a let's get it over with mood), said "Let's have them all" and invited the barrage." He said something like "LA, city of the shoes."

It was a fun show, backing a fun album. But seeing them in a stadium...well...it was different than the last time I saw the band in '72 and '73. I will not even mention '69. Different time, different audience, different band. The next time I saw them was in '81 at the LA Coliseum. That was just too much for me. I was not connecting anymore on any level.

No, Orange County is not East London, but neither is Tucson, Boulder, Oakland
or any of the other cities they went to in '78. It wasn't a punk thing, the throwing of the shoes. I grew up in LA and the whole punk scene hadn't really made a big dent yet. In certain pockets, yes. But that stadium full of Rolling Stones fans was not a punk-influenced audience. And anyway, Jagger's had stuff throw at him since the early '60s. I was at the July 23rd show (the day before) and had a great time.
