he sounds less "black" to me as he's gotten older....i'm not a huge fan of his newer style myself but his singing isn't the whole song to me by any means

Personally, I'd have preferred that there be NO overdubs on anything on the bonus disc. Give 'em a proper mix, but otherwise they should have been released with no tampering.

How can anyone call this "tampering"? Its mick and keith who "tampered" with it. would be tampering if it was done by someone without permission. Do u also consider TY as being "tampered" with? Ridiculous. This was what the stones set out to do and they did it. Love PMS. Great song. New vocals and all.

I do know about his new *affected* way of doing the vocals in later years tho' - don't know why he's doing that

I don't think the "affected" vocal is completely new. Listen to the alternate vocal to 19th Nervous Breakdown on the Aftermath Isolated Tracks. Nowadays, there's no ALO-like producer to choose the alternate take, drown the vocals under the instruments or add a loose doubling vocal.

I focus less on the tone of his voice, and more on the melody he sings. The Taylor notes complete it. Mick Taylor on a 2010 Rolling Stones song that I hear on the radio is a big @#$%& deal to me.
Still love that song.

Yessiree, we have a winner!

By the way, no Yoko musical reference is complete without

which comes from

I may be ill, because i still hear what i like, and those things i dislike i use not to hear.
I have enjoyed a lot last "Frankestein EOMS". I have gieen it a break.
In 1-2 months i will return to hear it with a new perspective. As well as SW + VL + B2B + ABB

StonesTod, you don't believe age is a factor then? Jagger's vocal is noticeably thinner than it was 20 years ago, that's aside from his phrasing etc.

yes, of course - but i can live with a thinner vocal - my ears are thinner, too. but, his overly-mannered vocal stylings, which were first introduced in the early 80's have now become his signature style...and it sucks. he's totally lost his way as a singer - keith is a better singer than he is...for crissakes, i'll take ronnie as a singer these days over mick.

LOL! Although Ronnie is doing his best singing since 1977, this is stretching it a bit too far grinning smiley

Jagger's vocals on Plundered are nothing less than great: they actually "make" the song. Thin? He never was no Howlin' Wolf, was he? Mannered? Steel Wheels was mannered. This is just fantastic!

I agree. A beautiful rocker. They all sound great. Mick's singing is so emotional, and full of contemplative regret, about the women in his life, and Ronnie Wood! Come on all the stuff about rehab...and Jagger saying he has to write from current experiences. I akin this to an older and wiser Jagger singing to his youth through this song, a love letter from the past and answered as an older and wiser man. Great track...and oh yeah, Mick Taylor rules on it!

Great the way Jagger sings a lot of triads over 2 beats..never heard him do this before like that. In Dutch it's called "kwartentriool" (Anyone knows the English translation ?)

Even if it's done by the Stones themselves, putting overdubs on 38 year-old recordings is indeed tampering. It's a false representation of what went down at the time and no better than Free as a Bird.

If they want to release the bonus tracks separately, fine. But they shouldn't associate any new recording with Exile.

Mick does not ruin the song, he sings decently, but his age affects his voice a little, so what.

yeah, its the age thing. nothing you can do about it.

I was driving through the countryside last evening when PMS came on my FM radio. After about 20 seconds I was absolutely cringing at the gawd awful vocals Mick put on this otherwise decent song. Can he not sing At All anymore? They were pretty much unlistenable. I just couldn't take it. Also the song would have greatly benefitted from some female backing vocals like a lot of the Exile tracks have.

...and if it was an instrumental you would have heard ?

Writers do it all the time. There is a hysteria on this subject w/ regards to Exile that really is funny. Artists review their works constantly.

It's their music so how is it tampering? They finished the songs, they didn't tamper with them.

I love the new songs and am glad they took the time to release them. If they hadn't finished them, the complaint would be that they were too lazy or didn't have enough creative inspiration left in them, so I guess there's no way to please everyone.

I, for one, and glad and thankful that Mick and whoever else took the time to finsh the songs and release them. And hearing Mick Taylor on a new Stones song is pretty awesome. Both Micks sound great on the tune, I love them together!...trulymicks....

baxlap, by your rationale does that make "Tattoo You" null and void, since they tampered with older tracks?

Re: Mick ruins Plundered My Soul

I can see why L'Wren was so worried about " Following The River"!! If that song is at all autobiographical, she could be in for a shock soon!
I have to say I made a mistake when I complained about Keith's vocals! It was not " Lovin Cup " that he sings horribly ( Mick sings it), it's " Soul Survivor" where he mumbles the " lyrics". TERRIBLE version, even though I realize it's not a finished version; I don't know why it was even included in this package.

No, I'm OK with Tattoo You. Temporal proximity is a key distinction. The leftovers on Tattoo You were relatively recent, 1 to 8 years old vs. 38 years old, and they were released for the most part as is, though with a hot mix, and as a separate album that was not part of a repackaging of an older album. The only significant overdubbing on Tattoo You is Sonny Rollins' two sax solos (one of which was on Neighbours, one of the two or three newly recorded tracks) and the vocals on Slave (five years old).
