Sorry, there you go:

[cgi.ebay.com]

There is a thread on the subject on the Ernie Ball Music Man forum, where the CEO of the company confirms the authenticity of the guitar. Pretty interesting stuff...

>>...where the CEO of the company confirms the authenticity of the guitar. <<

I only read the confirmation that it's a MusicMan Silhouette.

Eddie Vanhalen neck, built in '88 and signed in 2009 leave more than one question about authenticity.
also, is the ebay seller Don Smith himself?

when there's so much confusion, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

What a load of rubbish!! How does this cat know Keith? Who is he and where does he hail from and more to the point can he prove it was Keiths guitar? If he could then he'd have photo's of him and Keith being best buds, handing over the guitar etc.

I think it's legit, the pick-ups do look like they are custom and it's a six bolt, so the timing works.

Nah still not buying it. The thing is anyone could buy a guitar and scrawl a signature on it and put the thing on ebay. If it was Keith's there would be pictures of Keith with the guitar proving its provenance to justify the asking price. I'm sure Keith doesn't give out guitars willy nilly to people who then sell them on ebay. The EVH neck thing not buying that one either. Why put a super fast neck on a guitar for someone who doesn't play that style? I'm sure it's a music man silouhette. Just not one that Keith owned.

I don't doubt the signature, but I doubt it's ever been in Keith's posession. Ever so often people hand him guitars to sign, and he's done so now and then, but this guitar doesn't seem like something he'd purchase.

That's the whole thing... I don't think he would have ever purchased it either, but he sure did play it (or at least one of its twin.) I say this may very well be one of the three black silhouettes given to him at the end of the eighties by Music Man. Plus this model is not so common (think six bolt, custom pickups - the current Silhouette are 5 bolts)

Did anyone try the link in the ebay ad? It points to someone familiar. Anyways, I don't have 5 grands so I'm not going to torture myself trying to figure this out...

I don't find it very honest to have Bill and Mick Taylor (and Charlie) sign the pickguard and then fit it back on the guitar with the signatures of the others - probably because Bill would refuse to sign a guitar signed by the other stones.

Some things I don't get about this guitar - was it custom made for Keith or for Don Smith? The ad says it was given by Keith. This guy worked on Talk Is Cheap, so maybe he was around when Keith received the Silhouettes and this one was givent to him because Keith preferred the others? The ad is dodgy and plays with the idea that the Silhouette (not _this_ Silhouette) was a favorite of his in the studio.

Also, is the neck original? Was it changed later?

I'm a little lost with the Music Man that were given to Keith - I've read he was given 3 (black and white), that he had a 5-string Silhouette and that he had one with a b-bender (maybe the one heard on Eileen) ? Also, for Main Offender, he was given a 6-string short scale Silhouette bass.

i don't understand this advert either but i don't think they're claiming the neck was put on for Keith.
and although we all know Keith used Silhouettes, as everyone's saying, where's the evidence that he ever played this one?

>> I'm a little lost with the Music Man that were given to Keith - I've read he was given 3 (black and white) <<

there was also a sunburst one, but i've only seen one photo of Keith playing it.
i've never heard about a five-string or b-bender version. he did have a b-bender Tele, of course ...

Why is that? Keith's tone on the 89/90-tour was fantastic, imo.

Ok, i digged into the pile of old (french) guitar magazines... I'll translate it the best I can.

From "Guitarist Magazine", nov '92:

Quote

I'm using three Silhouettes. The first two, black and white, don't have a tremolo. The white one is fitted with Schaller, the black one has Di Marzio, both Humbucker/Single/Humbucher. The third one has a B-bender, I used it in the studio but won't be using it on stage

The 5-string reference comes from "Guitarist Magazine" again, jan '92 - there is a page with Keith's guitars, including some text about the black and white Silhouettes, which ends like this:

Quote

Keith owns a third version of this instrument which is a 5-string

I also came across a reference to a sunburst Silhouette which would have been used on stage for "Miss You".

I don't recall Eddie Van Halen being signed with Music Man while Keith was playing these, which, last I knew, was through the Steel Wheels tours. Don't recall him playing them since that tour.

So to me the guitar is bunk as far as it being the real guitar Keith played because of the EVH neck.

Those silhouettes are great guitars. And so tiny, they're perfect, I love mine!

Anybody could please help me find that thread that has pictures of all the Rolling Stones' guitars? It's an old thread (3-4 years old.) I've been looking for it, can't find it... It had an unusual title, but I can't remember it for the life of me...
