And how could we forget the Frank 'Red Card' Rijkaard special shampoo match in 1990.

Why did you have to spoil my day Silver Dagger?
It still hurts looking at this.
I sincerely hope it's going to be Holland-Germany this year.cool smiley

It won't be Amsterdammed. I'm in deep depression. Paul the psychic Octopus has predicted Spain and has got every game right up to now - even Germany's defeat by Serbia.

Anyone fancy any calamari for lunch??

Silver Dagger, they all are praising each other into the grave now, as we say it here, hoping the opponent will believe it and will overestimate himself or underestimate the other team. It's a phenomenon our team regularly had problems with, especially in 1974 when they indeed where twice as good as all other teams. Maybe even the best team in whole football history. But in football the best team doesn't always win, especially not in a knock out system, as we all know.

Yeah, we Dutch are always fighting with each other, even on this forum. It's part of our culture, but we also know very well we have to work together in order to succeed. Sometimes a big quarrel can help to clear the air and does make every player sharp (the 'Cruyff doctrine'), but this time it's peace all over the place, with only one dissonant when Van Persie was replaced in the game against Slovakia. He shouted to Van Marwijk: "You must replace Sneijder" and sat down with an angry face, without paying attention to the others and to his team. Van Persie is typically Dutch. But if we are too 'close' to each other, too friendly and too nice, then things don't work either. Then we see a weak and meek team, playing for the fair play cup instead of for the real one. This time they must have the mentality of real bull fighters, but also play as tactically and technically well as they can.

So we still have to see if this peaceful atmosphere will do the trick this time.

Good comment kleermaker. I'd be the first to say that the Holland team of 74 is probably the ultimate team the world has ever seen. The inventors of total football. I think the present German team has had a look at some videos of the Dutch team from those days and tried to copy the style.
Anyway, it will be a hard match tonight against an opponent as obstinate as a bull. Hard to break down but always dangerous on the counter attack...very similar to old Italy. In that respect I'm glad we are playing Spain because it should be a more open game. Good luck tonight.

Thanks Silver Dagger. Regardless the outcome of todays match I'll watch Germany - Spain tomorrow with big interest. If both teams keep on playing like they've done so far, as much attacking as possible, it'll be a great game and impossible for me to predict which one will win.

Speaking of prediction: Havo, where are you? I'd like to know your prediction before the games!

Not that hard to predict given the quality of some Serbian players like Vidic from Man Ut, Ivanovic from Chelsea, Stankovic from Inter etc. Serbia could have gone far this time but completely messed up in the first half against Australia where they dominated without scoring a goal despite many opportunities to do so.If I can recall it roght I think that the Octopus predicted Serbia would pass the group stage.Little did he know how messed up our players can be under pressure.

Nothing would make me happier tonight than a very dubious refereeing decision that

A. Results in a Dutch goal
B. Denies Uruguay one

Preferably both. That would be most delightful

Let's hope for a fair game.I believe that Uruguay deservedly defeated Ghana. As despicable as Suarez's handball might seem I am quite sure that many other players would do the same in such situation. After all, I can't recall German players complaining when England wasn't given a fairly scored goal.Nobody so far has wished bad luck to Germany despite this dubious moment.people also tend to forget that referees were on Ghana's side for most of the tournament because they had to ensure that at least one African team went far into the tournament.

That's because Germany did not try to cheat the English out of a goal. It was the linesman's fault!
Let's just hope we see two great semi finals and a just winner taking the World Cup on Sunday. And please, no crazy Zinidine Zedane moments.

I remember the Amsterdam ArenA show on July 5th, 1998.
In the 2 minutes after last song and encore (Brown sugar)
they showd the goals against Argentina on the big sceen.
60.000 (including me, German) went mad. In that moment I
WAS a Dutch shouting HOLLAND - clapclapclap - HOLLAND ...

Those were the days.

Just shout it again this evening and hopefully also next Sunday, TooTough! It'll bring back good memories.

Btw: I just read that people from Uruguay have asked Sir Mick on Facebook to support Holland. They don't shun any means to win! It'll be a very tough match (read: battle) for Holland tonight.
