Regarding the USA match today, and the rules.

Is it OK for the other team to wrap their arms around,
and bear hug players and hold them? because the other
team was bear hugging at least 2 players on the USA.
Is that why the goal was taken away? We rewatched the
match, and I can not figure this out.

Maybe crazy rules like these are the reason interest
in football is lacking in the states..... heck, I dont know : (

b]

That incident had nothing to do with the rules but the referee making a clear misjudgment/mistake. According to football rules, there was nothing wrong with the goal (in fact, a penalty kick for the US - for the reason you described - would have been more fare than the US players doing any faults, as it seemingly was judged.) But one cannot help it. The referee is the boss because it is only his interpretations that do count. The justice does not always take place in football but it is part of the game in being so human, so human...

US robbed of third (and winning) goal. This could make the difference in advancement to next round. Horrible officiating.
Don't be so hard on him, I thnk he has a future as an NBA referee.eye rolling smiley

Or the NFL, I'm still hurting with the Hochuli call against the Chargers.

Not defending this guy but he whistled (wrongly, yes) before the goal.

Very strange to see a French team play with so little unity - and a coach who didnt seem to have any urgency or answers.

Why do you find it strange? They've been playing like that for a few years now. Exactly what happend last Euro. Here in France nobody's surprised.

For a bad team, they managed to come within a penalty kick of winning the World Cup in 2006.....

Yes, true and they beat Spain and Brazil in the process but it was more by accident, as did Germany in 2002. I remember that Domenech was having a hard time qualifying (some déjà-vu) and he had to bring Zidane and Thuram out of international retirement to get the team qualify. Then came the 2008 Euro and they didn't even got to the second round, then came the WC qualifying and we all know what happend there.

Seems that England will tie again.

Two things stuck on my mind from the day of the WC draw:

Benzema's disdain when he found out about France's group (seemed soooo easy) and the British paper that called England's group EASY as in

England
Algeria
Slovenia
Yanks

Not that easy in reality.

What's the wrong with these European big ones?

England has been really a big disappointment so far. Where is the feeling? Algeria fought hard and all the best for them, but this was one the worst games in this tournament.

I don't understand why Emile Heskey is on the pitch from the start. I understand the concept of two attackers: One fast and good with the ball and one big and strong. That's a very English concept. It's just old. It's an old concept that doesn't work as well as earlier. Keep that guy they replaced Heskey with (Can't remember the name). He should start in. Two fast attackers that can dribble. That concept worked well for Manchester Utd. when they won the Champions League in '99. They had Dwight Yorke and that other fast one, and they never played better. If it's so important with a big, strong attacker, why not Peter Crouch. He's a good one, and certainly better than Heskey. Amazing to see Capello not forcing his own kind of football onto England, but rather keeping status quo in the English strategy. Not exactly what you'd expect. The team has great potential, but they really need someone ho can tap into it and use it.

I wouldn't want to read the English newspapers tomorrow.....

next one, you will be out M Referee, so watch out !

Yellow card??? He should be red carded and never allowed to participate in a tournament again.

That was a horrible call that should never be made at this level of competition. That kind of officiating is unacceptable. Send him back to catching poachers in the bush.

Like Johnny Harkes said on the American broadcast last week, Fabian is in the crosshairs for his decisions, and waiting until the last minute to make them. That can't help anybody's continuity.

Absolutely right. But these mistakes have been made in the past and unfortunately they will be made again in the future. People make mistakes and as long as FIFA (and other leagues) refuses to use video to overrule the referee these things will happen.

He probably had the same expression throughout the game!

No chance of him becoming an endangered species perched on top of the net and his post match interview probably made more sense than Rooney's idiotic rant to the camera as he trudged off.

The rosbeef are down and out. Awful beyond words last night. Rooney's thrown his toys out of the pram and Capello's starting to sound like a character from Allo Allo

(Yes i know thats French not Italian but you get the point)

I'd wager £50 on us failing to beat Slovenia on Wednesday.

Ian Broudie's already re-recording Three Lions as 'WE'RE COMING HOME, WE'RE COMING HOME, WE'RE COMING. ENGLAND'S COMING HOME'

I echo Gazza's comments- absolutely dire!

Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard where were you? - I suppose Gerrard has some excuse as Capello keeps on playing him out of position.

They deserved the boos- I think Capello should drop Rooney for the next one and play Crouch/Defoe up front with Gerrard just behind in the centre.
