Best Bass Performance by a Stones Guitarist

Sorry if this has been brought up before. Some of the most interesting bass work on Stones records has been done by their guitarists.

My vote for number one is Fingerprint File by Mick Taylor; melodic, fluid playing. Close runner up is Ronnie on Emotional Rescue.

Others of note: Keith on SFTD, JJF, and Live with Me and MT on Tumbling Dice and Shine a Light. There are others too...

What are your favorites?

Has to be Keith on Sympathy. (Though Bill does it better on Ya Yas!)

Hide Your Love is worth a mention - not sure if that's Keith or MickT.

As much as I love Bill Wyman's bass playing ("Slave" and "Start Me Up" being particular favourites of mine...those are Bill, aren't they???), ironically, my favourite Stones bass lines were played by the guitarists!

(Although, if you really wanted to get nitpicky, Wyman started off as a guitarist and switched to bass...spinning smiley sticking its tongue out)

If I had to pick one...Mick Taylor's bass on "Fingerprint File" makes the song IMO.

Ditto for Ronnie on "Emotional Rescue". Always liked his bass part on "Tie You Up" as well. "Fight" too, for that matter.

Keith? "Sympathy", of course, with "Flash" and "Live With Me" not too far behind (when I first saw the song-by-song credits on the "Let It Bleed" LP I was like, "That was KEEF?!" ) "Crazy Mama" for a Keith "Deep Bass Cut".

"Goats Head Soup" is probably my favourite album for Stones BASS...and, again, Bill's only on about half the album or so...

Why is that, anyway? After "Sticky Fingers", Bill only plays on half the tunes, it seems. Did they not like his original parts, and redid 'em, or was he just not in the studio at the time? Fortunately they needed him for concerts, where he kicked ass. I mean, Darryl Jones is great, and a more than worthy successor, but he ain't Bill...

Bill didn't do coke and wouldn't keep Keith's hours, so very often he just wasn't there, so Keith (or whoever) would do the bass. I don't know of an incident after "Sympathy" where someone simply took the bass away from him while he was there to play it. From then on it would simply be a matter of him not being there at the time.

It also didn't help that the others (Charlie excluded) plain didn't like Bill. I can only imagine that made it hard for him being in the studio (or anywhere) with them. Nobody likes to be someplace where they're not wanted.

'Educated' guess on my part, but I want to say it's Bill on "One Hit". Bill on bass; Ronnie on acoustic (and possible electric rhythm); Keith on rhythm and 2nd lead; Jimmy Page did the main solos.

Not sure if Keith played any bass at all on "Dirty Work". I always reckoned it's Bill on "One Hit", "Harlem Shuffle", "Winning Ugly", "Dirty Work" and "Sleep Tonight". Ronnie on "Fight", "Too Rude" and "Back To Zero" and Ivan Neville on "Hold Back". No bass on "Had It With You", of course.

Tommy

This is pure speculation, and actually bollocks. Bill is always present during the main recording and rehearsel sessions. The problem for him is that the tapes then are sent around the world to wherever Mick and Keith are for mixing, editing and overdubs, and this is when many final bass parts are recorded. For most of these sessions Charlie and Bill are not present for various reasons.

Bill has too many to mention so my fave (outside of Bill) is Ronnie on "Emotional rescue". Simply superb.

Man I miss Bill....
