Andy Babiuk has written, performed and produced multiple albums and continues to tour throughout the world with his popular band The Chesterfield Kings.

Babiuk has been working on a follow up to Beatles Gear entitled Stones Gear – a history of the equipment used by The Rolling Stones.

The book is officially released on Tuesday February 4th, 2014.

I emailed Andy and asked him about this book. His answer was vague as all he said in response was "next year"...

At last a publication date! I've been waiting for this one for some time now!

Stones 62, there have been several publicatio dates. Not to sound like a wet blanket; I know the book will come out, jst is taking a sweet while.

Been waiting for this one for a long while.

I wonder, though, given the more numerous players, the much longer time frame invloved, and WAY more possible instruments to cover, if this book can be anything like the Beatles Gear book, which gave each instrument such loving coverage.

I have always wondered how the music shops survives. I have, almost, never heard of a professional musician actually paying for his instruments. It seems that there is always someone else picking up the bills. To gear up a band from scratch must be very expensive...

If a professional musician is getting free gear it's way more likely directly from the manufacturer, as in through an endorsement deal. I've never heard of a "music shop" giving gear to any bands. I can see loaning gear to musicians, especially if they're famous and live in L.A. and the gear is rare and will be used to record a million-selling album or some such but a far more common story is stores coming after people who are behind on payments, credit card info has expired, etc.

Now if by professional musician you mean superstar,or well-known recording artist with a major-label deal then I'm guessing you're probably right. But, to me, a professional musician is someone who makes money, or makes a living, however meagre, from playing and I don't think I've ever heard one say, "hey, that store down the road just gave me all this gear....just 'cause!"

? The reason why guitar shops still exist, and the reason why vintage gear is so expensive, is because all the rock stars pay premium for whatever they want. The reason why a '59 Les Paul costs $200K these days is because people like Paul McCartney, Mike McCready and Keith Richards don't mind paying that silly money. Clapton is known for literally buying up complete guitar stores.

There's a famous story about a shop in Denmark street. They where informed a famous guitarist wanted to visit the shop privately, so without other customers around. The shop agreed, closed the shop, and then added a zero to each and every price tag of the vintage gear....

I am really curious about this book though -the Beatles have used quite some gear, and most of it was still available to inspect by the authors. The Stones have used a very limited amount of gear, at least up to around '75, and from the text above I do not get the impression the authors have inspected the instruments in person. They either where not allowed access, or it is due to the simple fact that most gear just isn't around anymore.
