Oh what a lovely song. Gloriously stoned and decadent. I love the versions from Live Licks. Keif riffs hard and I love Ronnie's slide. And Jagger aping at the end..."I'm a momomomomomomonkeyyyyyyyyyy!"
Great! Let it Bleed is one of those perfect albums, part of a greater concept. Taking the great songs out and recognizing their brilliance, but then listening to the entire disc as if it is one song, several little stories. Monkey Man fits in perfect with the cast of gin soaked bar women, cracker floridan red necks, hell hounds, basement junkies, three somes, pearl necklaces on large breasts, with coke, serial killer sadomasochist, stale pizza, glorious post junk sun rises that glitter like silver, burning riot infected rape plagued inner cities, with a choir singing to lucifer while he un-plugs the lava lamp and throws it against the wall. Truly, the end of the sixties like no band could have summed it up. Brilliant.
Oh yeah, I love Monkey Man! Keif is on fire playing all those heavy rhythm bursts.

Ahhhh..the unmistakable opening of a twinkling piano and a whining guitar.....

"I hope we're not too messianic or a trifle too satanic...we love to play the blues" - What an incredible line. Brian must have loved hearing that.

In '94-'95 it was a show-stopper with Lisa pulling out all the stops in the female lead. Subsequent versions have been Mick only. They were playing it in the States toward the end of the ABB tour in 2006. I heard it back-to-back with 'Live With Me' on a cold Chicago night...

I was at that Kilburn Gaumont 74 show but don't remember them breaking into Monkey Man. Will have to take a look at the DVD tonight.

To me, it's one of those Stones songs, like Gimmie Shelter, that when played live, just doesn't cqapture the atmosphere of the studio version.

Monkey Man is one of the best Stonessongs ever, the liveversions during the Lickstour were great.

I agree with Cafaro. The grittiness in the riff, and the emotion in the vocal has not come through in the live versions... I love the original, one of my very favorite tunes of all.

the "tension" on the studio version just never got translated on the stage. the live versions just sorta "sit there." and lisa's over-the-top vocals make me cringe. kudos for trying, though....

i like the lyrics to this when mick sings "cold italian pizza used" and my favorite lyric "all my friends are junkies" "thats not really true"

It's a shame that Monkey Man wasn't played prior to ´94. It would've been nice to have live renditions from the Taylor era and Ronnie in his heyday.
I guess that's the downside of being too busy playing warhorses all the time.

MONKEY MAN
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I'm a fleabit peanut monkey
All my friends are junkies
That's not really true

I'm a cold Italian pizza
I could use a lemon squeezer
What you do?

But I've been bit and I've been tossed around
By every she-rat in this town
Have you, babe?

Well, I am just a monkey man
I'm glad you are a monkey woman too

I was bitten by a boar
I was gouged and I was gored
But I pulled on through

Yes, I'm a sack of broken eggs
I always have an unmade bed
Don't you?

Well, I hope we're not too messianic
Or a trifle too satanic
We love to play the blues

Well I am just a monkey man
I'm glad you are a monkey, monkey woman
Monkey woman too, babe!

I'm a monkey! I'm a monkey!
I'm a monkey man! I'm a monkey man!
I'm a monkey! I'm a monkey! I'm a monkey! I'm a monkey!
Monkey! monkey! monkey!.......

Great tune, in the studio and live.

I prefer the Licks and later versions, but '94 kicked ass, too.

The album cut starts off brilliant then stops short. I wish they'd worked on it more.

1st played at the Toronto club gig in 94.
And aren't the lyrics as corny as the ones from "I Am The Walrus"?

Yep. It is a shame that they didn't ever re-arrenge it into hard-guitar driven live form as they did to many other BEGGARS/LET IT BLEED-numbers and gave them a new life. I also agree with the teh posters that say that the recent live versions doesn't capture the same feeling as the original, even though they try to copy the originals. What was stunning in those 1969-75 live days - when the material was brought to live - that they didn't tried to copy the studio versions (which usually were perfect in their own terms) but always found a new, fresh way to play them. One can only IMAGINE what a guitar triumph "Monkey Man" with their 1972/73 condition might have been...
