The "Rare Songs Played Live" Thread

The Licks tour was unique in the modern era, as some rarities were indeed included once in a while. These included cover songs and Stones originals. Thankfully, some of these are included on the Four Flicks DVD set. This trend continued on the Biggest Bang DVDs, with the great covers of "Learning the Game" and "Bob Wills is Still the King" from Austin.

Sure, no so-called "hardcore" fan will EVER be pleased, but the boys HAVE had a go at some unusual selections in the last few years.

Absolutely! And let's not forget the Licks tour, with tremendous versions of Heart of Stone, She Smiled Sweetly, and more.

Not to mention a thoroughly bizarre medley of Yesterday's Papers/Goin' Home back in the 1960's.

All great stuff! Can't wait to hear what R&B number they'll dust off next year. How about some Parliament-Funkadelic? 'Tear The Roof Off The Sucka'?

MIGHT AS WELL GET JUICED in MSG '98

Mick on keyboard and Keith on the slide, freakin' unbelievable moment.

Think god someone managed to capture it on video.

I was so lucky to be at the Austin show...and for me even Sway was a rarity.

So much fun to watch and hear Keith playing Learning The Game at a volume no DVD or home system will ever recreate!

I'm off to my Austin DVD now with my ticket stub and cold beverage of choice...thanks for the idea

I think the medley on the '67 tour was Get off of my cloud with Yesterday's Papers.
I was thinking about them doing "She's a Rainbow" on the Lix our. That was rare.
And "Sure the One you need" in 75.
"Roll over Beethoven" in 70 Europe.

I dunno. What's rare anymore? Something they've never played. Ever. She Was Hot. Sway. If You Can't Rock Me in its entirety. What else? I dunno. The covers are no big deal to me. It's just less of their catalogue they aren't playing. I wish they'd just leave the covers for albums.

Good question. Of course the songs that they hardly ever played live could be called "Rare Songs". But I can also imagine that everybody has his own rare songs. When I went to my 1st Stonesshow, every song they played was rare to me. Simply because I heard it live for the 1st time. Later on there was always that 1 special song that I never heard before which made it rare for me.

I already posted this quite some time ago in another thread, but I think it fits into this thread as well.
When I got home afer the last O2 show in 2007 I started to make a list of every show that I attended, including the setlists. After that I made a list of all the different songs they played at those shows. Of course the songs that I heard only a few times are the "Rare Songs" for me. Just click the link below if you want to check it out.

I saw 'Salt of the Earth' at Twickenham in 2003.Completely out of the blue, played twice in 1989 and never since.

It was also fun watching the bemused blank stares around me as they played it.

In fairness to Jagger, he has always been very much aware that the hardened fanatics have a desire to hear the rarer songs from the Stones back catalogue.

I'm thinking in particular about the Voodoo Lounge tour when he was inviting fans to vote on the internet for a song that they particularly wanted to hear. His explanation for this idea was along the lines of "providing something special for those couple of thousand fans in that area in front of the stage".

As for my own favourite rarity, I'd have to go for "That's How Strong My Love Is".

Jagger at his very best.

I believe Nashville got the only performance of "Far Away Eyes" on the entire Bridges tour back in 07, and one of the few period since the 78 tour. That may be the single rarest number I have seen them do (though I did get some of the Licks tour novelties like "Stray Cat Blues" back in '02).

That's part of what makes Shine A Light a reason to actually have bought it - the performances of Far Away Eyes and Some Girls. The rest of it I could do without - but those are quite good.

I certainly could list off some rare Stones songs that as far as I'm aware of they've never performed live - Parachute Woman, Jigsaw Puzzle, Casino Boogie, ha ha - Emotional Rescue, etc...

Don´t Look Back was a rather big surprise in 2002...

It was great to hear 2000 Light Years From Home in 1990. I wished they'd do Citadel. Such a great rock song too.

Parachute Woman was played at the Orpheum in 2002.

It was!!!???

I figured at some point something I thought they'd never played before would come untrue.

Well - was it good? ha ha.

Not only was it played, but it was shortlisted for inclusion on the original track listing for 'Live Licks' before they dropped about ten of the songs.

'Learning the Game' was, IMO, the highlight of the entire ABB tour. An absolute shame that they played it on just that one night and never again.

Come to think of it Barn Owl that version of THSMLI on the 2002/3 tour was pretty damn amazing. It's probably the closest Mick has come to capturing his old 60s style since er, the 60s. A real magic moment when he gets the band to take it down before soaring to the mountain top and screaming the title.

You´re right Sway.
I just looked into Gazza´s great setlist site.
Acccording to it ,Fingerprint File was dropped three times (June 8th - June 11th/
Milwaukee-St.Paul-Boston),nevertheless it has been played about 42 times this tour.
Less than CYHMK meanwhile...
