Our future is in the past?

That's what recording industry executives must be saying to themselves.

The Beatles remastered provided a huge jump in sales last year
Jimi Hendrix (artist whose been dead since 1970) tops the charts with new album Valleys of Neptune.
and now the Rolling Stones Exile remaster is flying out of the stores.

just an observation.

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

Ha ha. It could also be said 'Good music is selling again'. It's why it sold in the first place and why those acts are so huge - they're damn good. And the further we get into the future the less powerfully good music there is.

At least, compared to those three mentioned and toss in Led Zeppelin and AC/DC too as far as fantastic kick ass rock and all that.

where this good music you are talking about? it's sure not on the radio or music video channels, about 98% of what's been released in the past decade sounds synthetic to me.

Yeah, but nostalgia's not what it used to be!

Good new music?Let's see

Wilco-Sky blue sky
Arcade Fire-Funeral , Neon Bible
Twilight sad-Fourteen autumns and fifteen winters
The Hold Steady-Stay positive
Justin Townes Earle-Midnight at the movies
M. Ward-Transistor radio
Les savy fav-Let's stay friends
Kings of Leon -Aha shake heartbreak
etc.

Just some of my favs that have been released in the last couple of years.Give em a listen. Most of this music could hardly ever be heard on mainstream radio or music channels.Sure these guys cannot really compete with the likes of The Stones, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Dylan etc but in reality even the peers of these artists couldn't do so.If you are into less experimental and more rootsy rock I suggest that you listen to Wilco's Sky blue Sky first

There is lots of good music out there but you have to search it out. Mainstream is very dull these days.

I agree 100%.
When I hear people (usually over 40) get into the whole "there's no good music these days" it's like nails on chalkboard. Or boomers who think that all new artists can be tossed off as "lady gaga crap"... (and when they say that you can surely bet they have no idea who she is beyond 'pokerface' or some mini clip they've seen from sitting on their fat asses watching ET all night).

There IS good new music out there, and those of us who know how and where to find it are having a blast!

Subscribe to podcasts.
Get out and see a #$%&ing local original band.
Get your radios off classic rock stations.

Otherwise, you'll end up listening to the same records for decades and decades, until you painstakingly obsess over every little detail of a band - what an OCD nightmare!

oh... wait...

New music doesn't exist. All "new" bands rehash songs and styles from the past. To me Oasis is still a new band, and allthough disbanned, they still are a 100% copy of the Beatles with a Stones attitude! ;-)

I was looking through a couple of Memorabilia shops tonight (if ya can call them that) alot of the stuff was over priced and over hyped. The owners reminded me of Second hand car dealers..ya know what I mean. And those shops are probably the last place ya would want to look if ya..wanted something that was the real Deal.

I know there is good music nowadays but I think or I thought the point of it was more about what's selling and The Beatles are selling more than the Drive-By Truckers. Exile On Main Street has probably sold more than the new DBT album. And so on.

That's all. Look at Elvis - dude sells gazillions of albums every year.

i don't listen to the radio, but i keep my eyes and ears open and listen to people who share similar tastes....there's never been a dearth of great new music to listen to....and there's always an abundance of great old stuff in case of emergencies....

It's way easier to make a successful promotion campaign for an album that the potential customers already love than for a new one that they are not familiar with.
Hence, it will sell better. The lack of new material can become too cheesy and boring to music lovers ears, but it sells. It's not a new business realisation at all, but old busker's wisdom, really.

Well I am under 40 and I would love to know where there's more good music to be had. Most of what I unearth is somehow related to the Stones - Blondie, Bernard, that amazing Norwegian? album on which Blondie and Lisa performed. We all have varying tastes so what one loves another may loathe. For example, I love the Black Eyed Peas (again wouldn't have been turned onto them if they hadn't opened for the Stones) but loathe the Charlatans, a band which many really like. Kings of Leon, to me, sound like everything else out there.

No one will hear any gripes from me if we get a plethora of previously unreleased Stones tracks that are either finished or not in a box set!
