Who played the intro to CYHMK?
Posted by: Justin ()

There seems to be a disagreement on my CYHMK video as to who exactly played the intro to CYHMK. Unless I was living in a cave all this time...doesn't KEITH play this...and NOT Mick Taylor?

Keith. No argument. Great, dirty tone he got on that track as well.

Justin, I read the comments on your youtube thread and I just don't get it. I guess I've played Sticky Fingers a thousand times and it's NEVER crossed my mind, even for an instant, that Taylor plays that part. He plays, I think, the other rhythm part, which is quite cool, actually.

We'll wait for othes who know to clarify the situation, but my ears tell me it's Keith all the way.

No doubt that it's Keith. His phrasing and feel are as distinctive as a voice.

Yeah definitely...same here. I never for one second guessed Taylor could've taken the intro.

Not sure what we can do to "prove" this with written, hard evidence, though...

That riff is one f the riffs that much of "The Keith" is built on.

yeah, and more - if the riff was Taylor's, he would've played it solo. he omits it every time.

and by the way - cool playin' Justin! thanks for the clip. my little advice is - try playing it two times slower and lil' bit harder. you know, more bluesy - stretch it out smiling smiley it's gonna be totally awesome then.

Actually, Mick Taylor played a different -- less distinctive and hard -- version of the riff when I saw him do the song live in 2001. But his emphasis was clearly on the latter half of the song, as expected.

Anyway -- without a doubt it's Keith who did the main riff. His guitar continues to play subtle rhythm guitar throughout the song while Taylor takes off. The funky second guitar is also pretty typical of Mick Taylor's rhythm playing -- fairly subtle and understated but with excellent timing and rhythm.

All this reminds me of what a freaking wicked piece of magic this song is on Sticky Fingers. The Stones in the studio at the height of their powers.

By the way -- nice video, Justin. It refreshed my memory of the riff pretty good.

I remember when I first heard this riff, it electrified my soul and transported me to another galaxy. It still does.

One of the greatest riffs rock and roll has ever produced. Arguably the greatest.

HaH! No way that Keith should have left over a heavy riff like that to young Taylor to play on a Stonesalbum ..Open G...well well well

I think all this stems from an old Mick Taylor-interview, where he pointed out that he also played rhythm guitar on this track. The reporter took it for granted that Taylor meant the main riff. But I'm confident Taylor was talking about the other rhythm part in the first half of the song (which is cool btw...).

Keith at his top. But Taylor is so great on that song.

yeah. if I had written it I'd have no idea how to mix 2nd guitar in the first part of the song - and Taylor does it perfectly... it's very "subtle" winking smiley then he's rocking in the 2nd part.
