Merle Haggard had already written "Okie From Muskogee", so Ray had to write this. Don Williams later wrote "Tulsa Time".

when I saw him in Berlin a couple years ago, he played Oklahoma, USA and told a story about how going to the movies with his sister (including seeing the musical Oklahoma!) inspired him to write that song.

I think Ray is in his classic morose reflection on the nature of capitalism, and the American prodestant work ethic. Oklahoma USA where people are basically indentured servants working for the man. All life they work, so what is the point of living life if you can't enjoy the freedom of the upper class. But is that freedom? Very communist in its core. Interesting and a great mind bender that has you reflect on the meaning of life if all we do is work our way through it. BEAUTIFUL SONG!
