One of my favorite tracks. Sticks in my head for days, too.

Angie is the worst abomination ever recorded by the Stones, in my humble opinion. Indeed, it may be the worst abomination ever recorded by anyone other than Barry Manilow.

This is a wonderful song.
Which represents the mid seventies-Stones very well.
Yes it is a soft ballad.
But made in way just the Stones could do it.

I borderline like it, but it's no Memory Motel.

What always perplexes me about this song is that I have absolutely no memory of ever hearing it on Top-40 radio at the time (and it was a top 10 single in the US). Yes, I was only 12 but I listened to AM radio all the time and caught American Top 40 every week. I remember hundreds of other songs from this time period (and most of them sucked). The first "current" Stones single I heard on the radio was Miss You 2 years later.

agreed, I'm a bit younger, but had never heard of the song until picking up Black and Blue in the late '80s. Whereas "Angie" still has a shelf life.

I always liked this song. A good representation of white boys doing 70s soul. MJs falsetto is great and the guitar work is great too.

I've always felt that Goat's Head Soup, IORR and Balck and Blue were the Stones reverting back to their soul roots as opposed to blues.

I always thought Black and Blue sounded very modern for the time. In addition, it was a great sounding record which cannot be said for every Stones album. I bought it the first day it came out and always loved it. It sounds like it has grown on people over time.

I'm actually not a fan of this song at all, and I wonder how it became a hit.

I love this song. But Memory Motel is my fave slow one.

If I can remember well, I read somewhere that the RS were working of the very early takes of FTC when Mick Taylor told MJ he was going to leave.
This would date FTC back to December 1974. Can any expert confirm this memories of mine: I can't find the book/mag/interview, after such along time.
Nice song, anyway: not my favorite one from 'Black and Blue' (my first RS album), 34 years ago.

Wow, this one seems to be a "love it or hate it" type of deal. I didn't like FTC at all at first (too slow and "boring" when I first heard it), but man has it grown on me. I've come to realize how moving and heartfelt the lyrics are, and how beautiful the production is.

The sonic dynamics on this track are nothing short of spectacular. Love the sound of the electric piano, Charlie's drumming, the string synth, the piano ... and Mick's vocals are amazing too.

A gorgeous, classic ballad.

Drew

To me Keith & Wayne's licks push this one to another level. Great playing.

Very unmemorable. Sounds like it belongs on IORR more than Black and Blue. The entire album has no cohesion. It's like they wanted to make a hot dance reggae album but they had to appease the rock and roll crowd with the unconvincing Crazy Mama and Hand of Fate. It seemed very cynical. I remember liking as many songs as I didn't like, and there were only 8 to choose from!

One of the kind. Is there any similar songs known from other bands?

This is one of the few songs I actually consider to be a true embarrassment. It's up there with "let's work" as far as cringe-worthy moments.

Was Fool to cry the first song ever that Mick played an instrument on on stage?

(Not counting the harmonica and all sorts of percussions, of course).

Almost certainly. I know that he played a guitar at some Danish gig rehearsal in 1970 but 99 per cent sure the string synth was his first live instrument.

Mick used a Hohner Clavinet on Fool To Cry live in 1976, Billy Preston played ARP Solina String Ensemble synthesizer and Hammond organ.

I feel I shouldn't like Fool To Cry, but for some reason I do.

The first time Mick played guitar live was YCAGWYW on Rock´n´´Roll Circus.
2nd time was Fingerprint File on US Tour 1975.
The first time he played keyboarsd on stage was Fool To Cry.

The classic 76 performance...

thumbs up

Didn´t Keith once fell asleep on stage while playing this song in 1976.

This could possibly be the worst song in their catalog. Even the lyrics are horrible.

If you have kids they're not THAT horrible?

I have always liked this song, but the best treatment was on the longer early take that runs close to 6:00. That's the one they should have put on the record! Great soulful guitar work accented by keyboards and underpinned with some mighty fine MJ vocals. This longer outtake is on Static in the Attic and other releases. Late at night driving out on a country highway this one is wonderful.

The lyrics are horrible. If someone took a night class in song lyric writing this lyric would come back with a failing grade.

Fool To Cry is a cool blues ballad and I'd see to see it played live. The closing is so restrained and still packs a punch!! cool smiley

Great, great ballad.
Great blues.
Performed the rockstar-supergroup-attitude, the band were in at that time.
On the 1976 Europe Tour a real hit.
Still good.
But it´ll be always a song for the more relaxed part of the Stones-fans.

Agreed. The song is very emotive. The guitar lines just weep. It's that longer outtake that really drips with soul. As compared with the more polished finished track, less is more with that early cut IMO.
