It nearly makes you wonder if the canned music was dubbed AFTER the performance because when they were miming they usually did a much better job!

Definetively the coolest band in 1966! And being controversial was still their second nature...

I never seen this before; what's the origin of it? Can anyone inform?

A totally new clip to me.According to 'Good Times,Bad Times'by Rawlings and Badman and the Karnbach book they played the song on 'Top of the Pops' 3 times ,The Eamonn Andrews Show','Big Beat' in Australia and Ed Sullivan, all in Feb 1966.It's not Ed Sullivan as that was in colour so presumably it's one of the others, although for some reason,it looks like a US clip to me.
Apparently, they played Mothers Little Helper on TOTP in April'66.Wouldn't it be great if that turned up as well

Going by Mick's top and the streamers falling across
stage looks pretty much like 1966 Australian TV broadcast .....

Remember being glued to screen ....Couldn't get enough of it...then it was all over ... NO VCR/DVD recorders in them days......

Thank you for the insight Rockman and still ill. In regards to the TOTP performance of Mothers Little Helper - I suspect it was a playback - It is very doubtful that we'll ever get to see it. Those idiots at the bloated broadcasting corporation binned so many TV programmes in the 1960's. Its quite tragic that we only have those few TOTP performances available: Not Fade Away, The Last Time, Get Off Of My Cloud, Lets Spend The Nigh Together, Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar - the latter two, in fact being taken from Christmas 'specials' and not the original broadcast.

I think you're correct.

Nzentgraf says this...
17th February: Australian TV (Channel 9) ‘Bandstand Special’, Sydney.
- I’m Moving On (Hank Snow)
- Get Off Of My Cloud (MJ/KR)
- Play With Fire (Nanker Phelge)
- 19th Nervous Breakdown (MJ/KR)
- As Tears Go By (MJ/KR/Andrew Oldham) -MJ and KR only
Note: All songs are playback. Aired on the 20th February

and considering this clip is from the same show

then the mystery,if there ever was one ,is solved.

Would be great to see the other songs though

It's terrible really and the ITV companies, apart from Ready Steady Go were little better. All those appearances on Thank Your Lucky Stars and maybe 2 surviving clips. The Tony Blackburn 1968 Poll Winners clip, gone. If you look through reference books and the internet, you realise how much is lost, and not just from the Stones. They just didn't see the historical value in keeping these shows.
Luckily the US networks did

Is that official lingo for "lip synch?"

Re: 19 nervous breakdown live 1965

Not entirely, often Mick was singing live to a pre-recorded backing track. Sometimes it appears the band is miming playing their instruments; other times it appears they actually played the song but TV audiences heard a pre-recorded backing track as the performance footage will not match up to the audio.

Rocky Dijon is correct of course - though was the backing-track that of the released recording, or was it recorded live earlier on? I suspect the former in most cass.

Sometimes it was a mix of both.I think As Tears Go By on Ed Sullivan had Mick singing and Keith playing acoustic live over the original studio backing track

You may be right but Ed Sullivan did have an entire house orchestra present at these shows!

Keith is definitely miming during ATGB at the Sullivan show, the rest of the stones slot is totally live though.
