Charlie Watts on critics

Hi folks

Clash recently tracked down Charlie Watts to chat about 'Exile..' and the topic of critics arose. Given a mixed reception at the time, the album is now a lauded rock classic.

So what does Charlie think about them?

"I don’t really read them. I mean, critics are... that’s like playing with yourself. Critics don’t mean anything in the long run".

Good for Charlie...I only hope this doesn't give playing with yourself a bad name...

I had a simmilar association.- Charlie Watts makes a good point when he says that critics are very important in jazz and classical music. Popular music taste is something very subjective. It is hard to put up an objective discussion wheter the Stones or Barbara Streisand play the better music, but nobody can say that Rubinstein's interpretations of Chopin are bad. In Germany we have a wonderful classical musiccritic called Joachim Kaiser, he simply knows what he is talking about, he is inspiring, but of course one has to develop an own oppinion.
