Let's raise a glass to Bobby Keys

Wonderful sax work has added so much to many great Stones tracks:

Brown Sugar, Casino Boogie, and Swet Virginia among others. What's your favorite BK moment?

Paris 98 I was front row & When he 1st appeared at his "balcony" during "Flip The Switch" I waved at him and he, and his big texor sax, saluted me. At the end of the show I gave him the thumbs up and he gave it back to me thumbs up

I'm frankly amazed he's still around, given the stories about his hard living life-style.
Unless like Keith there is a lot of mythologising going on.

its a miracle he survived being fired by The Stones. As Keith says, once you're out, you're out!

a true original-being there from the beginning of r n r (well, practically!).
My fav BK story(or myth?) is his being hired to play on Yoko's solo album. The story goes she cornered him and said "Imagine you are a frog..."(or something crazy!) to which he replied "Lady, yew shore got a strange slant on thangs, startin' with yore eyes." Probably a "story" but still entertaining to me.

I bumped into him in the hallway of the PBS studio after the Winos shoot that became the Soundstage TV special in 1992. He signed my set list and was very nice, albeit very sweaty as it was hot under the lights there. Another fellow, with more nerve than me, begged him to go into Keith's dressing room and get his autograph as it was the fellow's birthday that day. Bobby took the piece of paper (another set list if memory serves) disappeared and then returned a few moments later. Scrawled across the sheet, lengthwise in black sharpie, were the words, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY! --- Keith Richards."

i'm sure i've mentioned it here before - but several years ago when bobby was playing with levon helm's blues band - my buddy and i had a nice little sitdown chat with bobby...at a little blues club in SF...he came over (sax in hand) on his way up to the stage to get his gear set up...very gracious fella...

Gnat: great interview. I like "everything's a long time ago" - I can relate to that. But "Brown Sugar pays the rent" - yep, and so it should - it's f*ckin genius.

In 2006 I was back stage at the Stones' Halifax Canada show and saw this guy wandering in and out of the room. I kept saying to myself, "I've seen this guy before. Who is he?" I got the impression that day that he was kind of a shy person. Anyways, while watching the show later that night I realized that he was the famous Bobby Keys.

It was when I met him on ströget in Copenhagen, when he was out all alone by himself for a walk. It was 1988, the x-pensive winos europetour. He was so shocked that I know who he was.I told him: Ofcourse bobby you play with Stones man, and I love your saxplay. Oh man,Brown sugar its so wonderful, and lot of other songs too! So lets drink to BOBBY.

One of my favorite BK moments is his first appearence on a Stones Record on Live With Me. He sounds So good on that song. Also I Got The Blues From the Marquee Club appearence,

his telling of the story about Having "Mediation Gatherings" is new favorite of mine.

I met him at a manchester hotel, where my mrs spotted him.

Normally i would not bother people for autographs etc, but i thought i would never get the chance to do it again and so asked bobby for his autograph in which he indicated he would be over in a minute in which he duly did and came across as a really nice guy.

Cheers bobby.

As it happens all of the stones were stopping in that hotel and was even on the same floor as us, but never got to see any of them thou.

An essential ingredient for the early 70's stones! Keith's foil, his party buddy, and a musician's musician! Played on a lot of great music, not just the stones. And by all accounts a great guy.
I got to get his autograph after seeing the stones in Shanghai. I was in the immigration line and looked and standing a few people in front of me in a long line was Bobby. I had to ask for his autograph. I only had my ticket stub from the show, and went up in line and introduced myself and he was such a nice guy! It was funny he used his passport to put my ticket on to sign and then proceeded to hand me all his stuff with my ticket. I laughed and handed back his passport and told him he would need it. He laughed and thanked me...

Beside his sax playing I like and remeber this scene (not the song at the moment)
during L&G when he´s doing some dance with tambourine shaking...
