I wonder what Mick is thinking reading all the comment about his voice by some of us Stones freaks ..........

I believe without a doubt that some of the stones read this board, not like us of course, its more ridiculous to think that they dont read it IMO

Keith and Charlie certainly dont for starters, as neither owns a computer. So thats half the band written off.
I think anyone who believes that the Stones are going to be bothered spending their time looking at fan message boards for insight, let alone any specific board, has a seriously elevated view of their own importance.

I think, at the very most, they might have someone on the payroll who would read a thread like THIS one (but NOT 99.9% of the other ones), and pass along to Mick a brief summary of what "the lunatic fringe" has to say. But, really, I think even THAT is very doubtful.
Does Macca have the same voice as in the 1960'ies, does Eric Clapton, does Keith, does Plant, does Rod Stewart and so on? No, no-one does.Quote

From the snippet I'd have to say this is going to be great. So what if Micks voice isn't the same as 1972. As long as the songs have energy I'll be satisfied. I'm sure it goes without saying it will be Rock N' Roll. Let's get ready to celebrate The Rolling Stones (some more) !!!
Then most band should stop recording. Listen to Dylan, Macca, Bono etc. - certatinly not better than Jagger on Bigger Bang.Quote

mtaylor, it's not so much Jagger has to sound like he did in 72, but more like he shouldn't be passing off Plundered My Soul as an Exile outtake when his vocal in my opinion is so embarrassingly bad. The Stones will never record another half decent track again, certainly if Mick is singing, if that's the type of sound we have fronting it. Jagger is plundering new lows.

So what is the problem Mick not singing like in 1972.
Still Mick sings very well. Listen to Stripped and you will hear great singing.
The vocal changes with age and therefore a singer fx can't reach the same notes as when younger. That's a natural developement.

I agree he still sings very well, but maybe citing a more recent example strengthens the argument.

I never for a second thought the new tracks would be on par with the rest of Exile as we know it, but it certainly is the most exciting release for a real Stones fan in a long long time thanks to having Wyman, Taylor and a younger Keith playing on it.

The problem here, IMO, is not the technical quality of his voice. Mick's voice is strong ... a lot stronger, in fact, than a lot of his rock-and-roll peers. To cite a recent example, listen to him sing on "Laugh, I Nearly Died". His voice is amazing.
No, the problem is not that he's losing his ability to sing, because he's not. The problem, IMO, is his musical judgement. He is over-emoting, and substituting snarl for substance. Like during the Dirty Work era, when he would bark out the lyrics. Couple that with a Don Was mix that puts the vocal wayyyyy too far up-front, and it damages the song.

A fair point, although personally I prefer to wait until I hear the whole thing before I judge it. Bit hard to say a song is 'damaged' based on 30 seconds.

Drewmaster, sometimes i wonder whether Jagger is over emoting because he's lost his natural power, and he's making up for it by trying to enforce a feeling of authority. I think in the Dirty Work era Jagger's voice was a lot thicker and stronger despite its shortcomings and he could perhaps still deliver a great performance, but he was merely lazy, or perhaps detached from the songs. In the last 25 years his voice has declined a hell of a lot

his overaccentuating is becoming a serious irritant, which is a shame because i feel the song definitely has potential. The style certainly appeals to me more than more recent Stones efforts, and those subtle touches by Taylor alone makes the track worth listening to. It is just so unfortunate that there exists such extreme aspects relating to being good and bad within the one song, certainly in my opinion.

don´t know about you folks, but i have to listen over and over again to those 45 seconds. and i can´t get this "plundered my soul" line out of my head since i first heard it.
"He is over-emoting"
agree. his voice sounds not too far from the young jagger, but the emotion is different.
