You may notice that Ashcroft wryly introduces Bittersweet Symphony as "a cover of a Staples Singers' tune"! Good on him!

For those who have heard it, what do you think of their new single?

I'm not particulary impressed to be honest.

Me neither. Has a good groove and momentum, and would work well live, but not a great 'song'. For me, you can't beat A New Decade and This Is Music as opening tunes on A Northern Soul - McCabe is absolutely brilliant on those sort of Verve tunes. Top guitar player.

I did not listen to the new album yet.
I am listening to the show and it's really an excellent R&R moment.
Some Aschcroft solo FM shows I have were very enjoyable too.

Very disappointing. Mind you, I wasn't expecting much, given the quality of Ashcroft's solo material. He reformed The Verve out of creative desperation. And - probably - the money too.

New single: that vocal or sample they keep repeating is so irritating !

As much as I like Urban Hymns, my Verve favourites are This Is Music and History from A Northern Soul.

Haven't heard it myselg, though it is apparently quite different to subsequebnt releases. They started out as a kind of spaced-out pyscidelic outfit and I think their debut represents that phase.
