I had always assumed that Keith, since he wrote all or most of the songs, was the one to play the opening chords to kick off the tune. I have always wondered who played the opening licks for these songs. Was it Jagger, Wood, Taylor, or maybe a guest guitarist such as Wayne Perkins?

Slave-Wood? Keith

Rain Fall Down-Jagger?

Can't You Hear Me Knocking-Taylor, according to Jagger, but others say Keith Of course Keith

Heart of Stone-Jones? Keith

Bitch-Keith or Taylor? Taylor

Someone help me out. I am trying to compile a list of all Stones songs whose opening notes are not played by Richards.

Actually not: [www.timeisonourside.com]

Both Taylor and Keith play slide on this track, and I think it's been confirmed here many times that it's Keith playing the opening riff, not Taylor.

I guess it will always remain a mystery, but the fact that this is the only song they
ever gave songwriting credit to Mick Taylor, is a strong indication that he's the one
to come up with the idea of the song. In the case of Ventilator Blues I'd say the general
idea of the song IS the opening riff.

I know it is open for discussion whether providing a riff to a song should be considered
something to get songwriting credits for. But as I said, this will always remain one
of the mysteries of The Stones.

Well, not really a mystery -it's Keith doing the opening riff, and it's also Keith live and during the Dallas rehearsals.

We cannot turn back the clock.
They shoud have left all slide work to Taylor on tis track
Keith slide playing is too sloppy imo, certainly when alcohol is involved and you're not that experienced or talented as a slide player.

You can smell Keith's breath from listening to a song?

Blimey...the technology on bootlegs these days is incredible!

Jagger plays the riff in "Winter." He also plays the opening riff of "Crazy Mama."

Yes, Mick plays the "Crazy Mama" intro and the main rhythm part throughout the song (left channel). Keith comes in around the 4 second mark playing the rhythm licks (right channel).

"Mick Jagger is reaching higher skills than the other reputated guitar players of the band"

Love it, if you guys repeat the rubbish enough times it starts to become fact....

Learn something new everyday.

And don't forget Jagger's keyboard gifts.

My non-musician friend always dismisses Jagger's playing too.
But as a guitarist, I could always tell that Jagger, while not necessarily technically proficient, had a great feel as a guitarist. Listen to stuff where Jagger opens it up - like Stop Breaking Down, Fingerprint File or Winter or Till the Next Time, Heaven etc - these songs are simple chord-wise, but the syncopatated rhythm cadences are organic and soulful.
That's a real musician.
Or better yet, watch and listen to that scene in CS Blues where Mick is playing that pretty song on the piano. He;s basically fooling around with the beginnings of a song with a few chords. The chords are beautiful minor 7s and then he goes into a sort of bridge and chorus......
Anyone who doesn't believe Jagger is a great musician or complete songwriter, watch him here: the way he's moving with the music, closes his eyes - he's feeling it.
That Jagger has always been underrated.

Agreed.
He pulled the Stones wagon.

I should add that as a self-taught musician, I've always recognized Mick's natural feel for playing keyboards and guitar - you can't learn feel and Jagger has that in spades when he plays.
Keyboards on Fool to Cry, Memory Motel...a great Emotional Rescue outtake: What Gives You the Right... to do the Things you do......
Lovely and, again, soulful.

You lost me there confused smiley I was referring to the liner notes on Black'n'Blue. They say three guitars; Mick, Keith and Ronnie. There are only three guitar tracks, and Keith is obviously doing the fills - so I imagined it was easy to spot Mick doing the rhythm guitar. Didn't mean to be cocky - sorry smileys with beer

What is the context of these stills? It must be from somewhere later on the '72 tour.

One Hit to the Body - Jimmy Page? (reportedly)

Speaking of the Dark Lord, he also played on "Heart of Stone" but I don't know how prominently.

I've always understood that Jimmy Page is only playing the solo.
