I agree with Think I'm Going Mad. Perhaps Jagger's most heartfelt delivery (and they are not so frequent to begin with), and his phrasing in interaction with the guitars is amazing. Ronnie & Keith interplay at its best; great mid-tempo groove.

Casino Boogie also: fantastic harmonies (as said above) and an amazing sax solo basically focused on one note for a few bars, with perfect swing. Country meets boogie meets soul in one deceptively simple masterpiece.

And Down the road apiece, for Stu's fabulous piano and Keith's drive.

"If you really want to be my friend" is "Let it Loose" Mach II IMO.

Talkin Bout You" has one of my favorite intro riffs that slides into the verse groove; kind of a minor key-ish sounding groove.

"Yesterday Papers", "My Obsession", "She Smiled Sweetly", "Who's Been Sleeping Here", "Complicated" - just about all of Buttons.

Two off Goat's Head Soup which for me remains their most under-appreciated album - at least of their classic run of late 60s and 70s albums to Tattoo You.

They are Hide Your Love which I'm really hoping they play live if they ever tour again. I just think the Oh Yeah bit lends itself to a great call and reponse with both Keith and the backing singers and probably also the audience. It has a great upbeat bluesy feel and has such a great groove.

The other is Can You Hear The Music - one of several tributes to Brian including Shine A Light and Continental Drift - which features some brilliant chord changes and very ethereal lyrics.

The beauty of Goat's Head Soup for me is that the album has a great mysticism about it - it swings both in musical styles from the down and dirty and direct on songs like Heartbreaker, Star Star, Hide Your Love, to the mystical in songs like Dancing With Mr D, Coming Down Again, and Winter. Even Angie has a real dreamy quality about it.

And for me Hide Your Love and Can You Hear The Music - two songs hardly talked about on this site - represent the two extremes - the earthiness and the other worldiness of this magnificent album.

Reading through this thread has made me realise that the Stones are an underrated ballad act, though not by the fans on boards such as this.

For what it's worth, my fave underappreciated songs are:

Down Home Girl
Citadel
Dear Doctor
Torn and Frayed
Shine A Light
Winter
Crackin' Up
If You Really Want To be My Friend
Through The Lonely Nights
Everything Is Turning To Gold
Dance part 1 and part 2
Melody
Where The Boys Go
Feel On, Baby
Sleep
Terrifying
Thru and Thru
Biggest Mistake

Some of these picks are totally personal in that I relate them to times and events in my live, most notably the last one where I f*%ked things up with the love of my life.

They can't perform Hide Your Love live, just like they can't do Sway. Unless they have MT on stage, because MT's guitar makes this song a blues one.

GHS is underrated in comparison with the 'big four', but it's the studio album I mostly listen to. Great songs on it like Mr. D (it's not SFTD but I like it), 100 years ago (one of their very best songs ever, if only because of the changes, the middle part, the great combination of the lyrics and the guitar), Going down again, Winter, Silver train (you just hear that train coming by, great teamwork of Keith and MT), Winter of course, to name some. One of my favourite albums.

Feel On Baby. A true gem, imo. Love the extended dub version, too.

Certainly Through The Lonely Nights is one. Killer tune. Amazing they left it off Soup. Same with Think I'm Going Mad - great song. Everything Is Turning To Gold. They sure can be idiots with their releases. Why do they leave such good songs off?

Jivin' Sister Fanny, anyone?
Great tempo, wonderful stripped-down sound & arrangement, marvelous guitar playing...

Interesting coverversions around, from Izzy Stradlin a.o., and some guy on YouTube (doin' a note-by-note 'play along' on the Taylor parts)

I'm probably the only one who will fess up to liking "Winter", but have always loved it - the mood, the lyrics, even Mick's vocals which he allegedly walked out on after 4 takes. One of the few "ballad-y" type songs where he sounds sincere. It's also interesting for me in that Keith doesn't play any guitar on it, it's just Mick and Mick which gives it a very non-Stones feel. Before anyone bashes that - Keith is my favorite guitarist, always has been always will be. But his absence on this song gives the band a totally different feel and Mick Taylor just runs with the chance to create some amazing leads throughout the song.

I don't think I'd want a steady diet of Stones songs like this - but it's a great change of pace.

Many here, including myself, love "Winter".

Indian Girl...Beautiful country song, great pedal steel (nowhere to be seen in "latin" music) and awesome political lyrics.

yeah, one of the few "indian-girl-lovers"...i'm with you. great track!

I love the much-hated "Indian Girl" too. Great guitar sound.

First of all, kleermaker, I'm not Dutch and I don't know any of your steady opponents personally:
I don't agree with you. Hide Your Love is a piano song, even played by Mick JAGGER! - Somebody who even puzzles Chuck Leavell on the piano. His playing dominates my impression of the song (in a positive way).
Sway and Winter are rather overrated as compositions (in my opinion). Therefore, it is no big thing to leave a big impression (though nobody does to me).

Feel on baby - yes.
I thought of one while driving today: She Said Yeah!
Heard a live version from like 65, maybe. Keith's mike doesn't seem to come on until in the middle of final verse in mid sentence, all the sudden he's there "Dom diddy dong". reminded me of Spinal Tap when the guy is stuck in the pod until the last verse.

Hold Back?????????????? Please!! A dreadful song!!

Within the Stones fan base these two are very appreciated but outside of real Stones fans a lot of people don't appreciate:
Monkey Man
Can't You Hear Me Knocking?

Fabulous songs!!

Streets of Love, it has been hammered so deep, right thru the floor of hell and beyond that it now transcends the criticism and deserves more appreciation.haha.

Two powerful early 60's rockers that never get discussed here....19th Nervous Breakdown and Get Off My Cloud. Great guitar riffs, great lyrics, Mick's vocals on top of his game. Just try to decifer the lyrics to "Cloud'. Everybody should take a listen!!

Backstreet Girl, Out Of Control, Back Of My Hand, The Storm, Sparks Will Fly, Lady Jane. Mostly their latter day rockers and blues tracks and their mid-60s ballads and pop tunes.

Maybe not "underappreciated" but surely underrepresented live is
Fingerprint File.
Love the studio version and a couple of live performances as well.

What a pity they decided to forget about it...

Here's a couple

Hearts For sale (SW)

Built around a riff by Mick Jagger surprisingly - One of the few times the Stones come close to "Heavy Metal". They should've performed it on the 89/90 tour.

Mean Disposition (VL)

Seems to get dismissed by many ... and yet I think it rock's like fury. Similar in style to 'Let Me Go' (ER), 'Dirty Work' (DW), and the later 'Too Tight' (Btocool smiley.
It's the modern Stones rockin out.. great!
