Will Richards and Jagger's war of words spell the end of the Stones?

They have been one of rock's most productive partnerships for 40 years.

But cracks are appearing in the relationship between clean-living Mick Jagger and his drug-ravaged bandmate Keith Richards.

Whispers are circulating that the Rolling Stones' touring days are numbered, as a war of words is driving a wedge between the group's two leading members.

Scroll down for more ...

Different outlooks: Jagger and Richards on their Bigger Bang tour

In recent months, after spending much of the past three years on the road together for their marathon Bigger Bang tour, Richards has on numerous occasions publicly slated Sir Mick.

Yet now the Stones' frontman, 64, has taken a dig at Richards's forthcoming autobiography.

Asked about the in-progress book, Sir Mick said: "It will be interesting."

Asked to elaborate, he quipped: "Well, I would have thought that you'd actually have to be able to remember your life in order to write about it."

The growing resentment between the pair is, say insiders, rooted in Sir Mick's eternal energy and drive compared with Richards's often shambolic state on stage and off.

Two months ago, Richards branded his bandmate "vain" and a "power freak".

The guitarist, 64, who had brain surgery two years ago after falling out of a coconut tree, said: "He is a power freak and there's nothing we can do about it."

He added: "Mick's a maniac.

"He can't get up in the morning without knowing immediately who he's going to call.

"Meanwhile, I just go 'Thank God I'm awake' and wait for three or four hours before I do anything."

Richards and Jagger, the creative force behind the Stones, have known each other for more than 50 years having been at primary school together in Dartford, Kent.

They have fallen out from time to time over the years, one notable dispute triggered by Jagger's decision to accept a knighthood in 2003.

Jagger reacted by saying Richards criticising him was "like a bawling child who didn't get his ice cream".

Fans reacted to latest war of words on an unofficial Rolling Stones website yesterday.

Personally i dont read too much into it, but keef is starting to get a little tiresome of late. If hes not slating all current bands in one broad and very unfair comment, hes having a pop at bowie (recently calling him a fake), and his sloppiness on some of the european dates of the bigger bang tour. I love keith, honestly i do, but i can really see why/how micks patience with him could be wearing a little thin.

If it happens it happens but these two guys have known each other nearly 60 years!
Most married couples don't last that long for one reason or another.
They'll survive a few media snipings even if self-inflicted.
Mick n Keef. 'til death us do part...

i agree, it is probably all rubbish, but still, keef sounds like an old man.

It may be BS,but l think Mick may be getting tired of Keith's constant put downs and attacks, even in a family or a marriage a time comes when you have to say enough is enough, and Keith has been a pain in the ass for a long time..
the soap opera continues...

Well, Keith obviously has too much spare time on his hands. The others (excluding Charlie who presumably has no such demons) keep themselves busy with projects.
Perhaps Keith should become an ambassador for UNICEF or similar for a year.Being an old man is fine, but a grumpy old man is something else...

That description of Mick sounds like my sister-in-law....and
Keith sorta sounds like my brother. Long story short...if
my sister-in-law didn't have the discipline to keep the boat afloat
and keep everybody else on track, my brother wouldn't do anything around the house.

Would the Stones be as active if Keith were driving the boat? Hell no.
Their squabbling is nothing to be alarmed by. (imo)
Mick keeps his eye on the $$$ while Keith keeps his eyes on his frets....
....and they live happily ever after. smileys with beer

IORR............but I like it!

if the dirty work stuff didnt split them nothing will, all will be forgotten at the 2009 press conf for yet another world tour, bank on it

What should not be forgotten is that when it comes to words uttered by one Keith Richards, reading them and hearing them spoken is just not the same thing at all for those who don't know any better.

Keith will tour with the Spice Girls before he lets the Stones crumble at this stage. These interchanges are so perennial, just typical jabs.

Rumor has it the Daily Mail is on the verge of bankrupcy. The situation seems to have gone from bad to worse for the Daily Mail; Their allreaday unreliable image has been further damaged by recent articles containing very suggestive interpretations of recent interviews with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Desperate for some interesting headlines, it seems the Daily May is willing to twist anybody's words.

What a load of cr..p. One only has to look at some of the looks they exchanged during Shine a Light to know what really is going on.

crap. The giveaway is when it said "keith had brain surgery two years ago after falling out of a coconut tree."

a proffesional journalist would have said the surgery was for injuries resulting from a fall. Its just worded in a way it to make him look silly. Its seems unrealistic to think that this is an actual article.

and the fan reaction thing??? what is that? FAKE.

I don't even see any 'resentment' or 'slaying'. He makes a joke about Keith's drug history, and that bit about Mick wanting to do stuff in the morning could equally well be positive. If this kind of joking around is resentment I apparently hate all my friends.

i think theres no big tensions between them

im not married , but an example is when a man gets a discussion with his woman because theyre getting old or they couldnt pay electric energy once.
cmon , there have been worse problems with the stones.
i dont think a stupid and small article on the news could make them weak . theyre experts.
