What the intro to/of Tumbling Dice is based on...

I thought it was "based on" just some messing about, a typical blues lick slide, no big deal. And if that is what your point was, then you might as well go back to You Can't Always Get What You Want or for that matter even 19th Nervous Breakdown simply because I've never read anything about what it's "based on", it's just something Keith came up with I GUESS, sort of his similar way of his fingers fell in the right place (eye rolling smiley) for Can't You Hear Me Knocking.

Alas, it is moot.

This thread is funny. What is Casino Boogie about? It's just another mystery on the Exile album, another gem to turn over in your mind and ponder. I must've listened to the song 500 times, and until today, I never read or cared to read the official lyrics. Here's what I heard:

No girl, can’t speak, wound up, no heat

Skydiver insider, skip rope stunt flyer

One dead lover got no time off hand

One less sack of, jailbreak on the sand

Awful business, no to understand

Judge and jury walk out hand in hand

Ice rink movies, close-up doggies

Kissing cousins can

Grotesque music, million-dollar sham

Got no tactics, got no time off hand

Left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle

Sinking in the sand

Fate and freedom stayed and she done

Washed that hat in black

Fate got plenty, got to time off hand..

**************

Laugh if you want, but that is my interpretation, and I'm sticking to it.

Um, pretty far off. The lyrics are published, you could look them up.

I can? Well dog my cats! But as I mentioned in my post, I've been listening to the song since 1972, and back in those days you couldn't look up the lyrics.

But I'll be sure to take your advice for now on 71Tele. You betcha! I'll look up the lyrics every chance I get. I'll look 'em up before I even listen to the song so I can be sure to get 'em right!

Well it seems the latest issue of Uncut clears up the delema...and the published lyrics look to be correct with KCC. Yay! Love that line!

Tele, why didn't you say that earlier, that we could look the right lyrics up? Would have saved much time, posts and a very long thread.
Btw: where are those published right lyrics to find? And what do they say about the kissing, the cut and the can or Cannes? You are hiding the clues long enough for the rest of us.

To change the subject slightly, do you consider this song to be a "rock and roll" song? If not, what genre of music would you categorize it as?

No, not as "rock and roll". What about boogie?

Boogie is correct, I think. Too bluesy and swampy for rock & roll.

Boogie is rock & roll...rock & roll is boogie.

OK, in one sense, yeah...That's how it started. Then rock & roll became something called "Rock" (as championed by Pete Townshend, et. al) and went away from its boogie roots. So "Casino Boogie" you could say was real rock & roll.

I think we all agree that Jumpin' Jack flash is rock and roll. So you two actually say that Jumpin' Jack flash and Casino boogie are the same sort of music, because they're both rock and roll. Come on guys, gimmie a break. I would call CB rather a ballad than a rock and roll song. But I don't, it's a variant of blues, just like jazz is. It's rather jazz than rock and roll. But you two, Tele and scl, wouldn't surprise me by saying: "rock and roll is jazz ... jazz is rock and roll".

Let's say CB is a jazzy kind of bluesy rock and roll sort of ballad. Everybody happy.

I don't think CB is jazzy at all...I hear strains of Slim Harpo and John Lee Hooker. But the two-part harmonies add a unique element usually not found in blue or boogie. Certainly open to interpretation what is rock & roll and what isn't.

"Not jazzy at all ..." Well, in painting boogie woogie and jazz seem to be related to each other one way or another, and as far as I know boogie has something to do with boogie woogie:

Boogie and jazz are "related", yes, but "Casino Boogie" is not jazz, IMO. Don't mean to split hairs here. It's a somewhat arcane argument as to where blues ends and jazz begins. Some feel jazz is a blues form and some don't. Regardless, I have better things to do on a fine Sunday afternoon than argue about what is and isn't jazz. Casino Boogie is a great swampy, bluesy track full of snaking guitars, mysterious lyrics and achingly lovely harmony singing, backed up by a juke joint groove; and that's good enough for me!

Agreed, I didn't say that and had no intention to start an argument about that, just a sidestep to the noble art of painting.

Not pissed off at all...I don't have a strong opinion on how to categorize music. I would rather listen to Casino Boogie - or better yet play it on one of my vintage guitars I have right in front of me, tuned to open G, than argue about it... I love Holland, by the way. Always enjoy myself when I am there.

I thought still pissed off because of my "sarcastic" remarks about the lyrics, remember? Are your really regularly here in Holland? For business or pleasure, if I may ask? Well, next time pay a visit to my humble house (we promise each other not to discuss the differences between jazz, rock and blues, but to praise Taylor all the time). Btw: I would never go to the US. I can't imagine why my wife would like to visit NY. Seen more than enough of it on tv.

Now I AM pissed off at your diss of my city of birth - New York. Not really, but you should actually visit before making a judgment. You really are missing something...I have not been to Holland in a few years. Was last there to switch planes last year, so that doesn't really count. I was there the time before to see Tom Waits and had an amazing time. I am a big fan of your "brown bars" and jinevoort (spelling?). Thank you for the invitation and we can argue all night about differences between rock, blues and jazz over the beverage of your choice. Those are the kinds of arguments I enjoy. There is a direct flight on KLM/Northwest between Seattle, where I live, and Amsterdam.

71Tele: New York is amazing indeed.Ive been there ,2 month before 9-11.
Very surrealistic, especially Manhattan.Very sunny days, but still a lot of shadow.
Great jazz club circuit, and the Marshall chess-club,where Bobby Fischer started his stunning chess career. It's gone I red somewhere...I stayed at the Chelsea Hotel, which has lost a part of it's charm due to a new owner. Many famous people lived there..
And MS Garden,I was 32 late I realized smoking smiley
If you get the chance to visit Amsterdam ,do it, you cannot compare it to NYC,but it's worth a visit.
