my favorite live version would be the one on the cd single of "Wild Horses" from the "Stripped" album. It was recorded at the Amsterdam Paradiso in 1995.

It's a nice slow version with lots of tension unlike a lot of versions where I feel they play it too fast and lose the vibe of the song.

I like those from US '69 the most. Some very intense versions they did back then
Don't care particularly for the 72-73 versions. Played too fast and Taylor's solos doesn't really do anything for me
On tota very much hit or miss. There's a few terrific ones from the last part of the tour
I can't think of any version from the last twenty years that I've found interesting

London, 9-9-1973. Exactly the right tempo. Good sound quality too. The best version I know.

The three best versions probably all are from the '72 / '73 era but, aside from that, honorable mention goes to Buffalo '75 ( the first of the two shows there that year I believe ) ; Tokyo 1990 ( the " Cold Steel Blue " show ) ; Paradiso '95 ; Foxborough,Massachusetts 1997 & Argentina 2-23-2006.

Well, to me the Altamont version is the best. Just brilliant.

Re: 3 best versions of gimme shelter

Well,yeah. I would put the '69 / '70 versions after '72 / '73.

I like the MT arrangement on the choruses on 72 tours; but i got tired of his neverending solos arrangements during verses, choruses and soloe, and endingas, and...... He played much better at the beginning, when he carried some rythm work

Praha 98 deserves a very honorable mention imo... and Loudei's right : the version on the "SO HAPPY" boot (1992-12-10?) is bloody fantastic!

Depends what you want: Guitar playing or Lisa Fischer singing

I prefer the guitar - that must what's Stones is all about:

There's so many...

My favorites

Altamont
Most of the 1972
Most of the 1973

But i also like the 1989-1990 versions.
One could like the guitar playin'versions and the Lisa Fisher versions
it depends of your mood

@dcba

I was at the Zenith Show in Paris in 1992, the WINOS version was awesome, maybe the last very good version I've heard.

I don't know about "best," but the two that come to mind immediately are Wembley '73 and "Thank you, Philly!" '72. I haven't heard DC '72 in a while, but isn't Taylor's playing on that one extravagant? And Altamont. I have a daydream fantasy of Keith and Taylor trading lines on an Altamont-type tempo arrangement that retains that eerie, rickety line Keith plays. In my fantasy that line fades in the song and fades it out.

The '72 - '73 versions were smoking versions, but if you don't like it, don't blame Taylor. The song was slotted in the early rockin' portion of the show. It was meant to smoke and it surely did. It was an age and time when the band showed off some musicianship. I am sure it all had Jagger's approval. He calls the shots on stage.

You're absolutely right about the DC '72. Pity the sound quality isn't that good, but the performance is indeed fabulous. In fact you're 'touching' an important point that I'll mention in another thread, as I already said there.

Jagger was very proud of Taylor's playing. He constantly stimulated him, especially during the 1973 tour. He loved his playing, it's so obvious. You can hear it on many boots. Taylor and Jagger went beyond the common borders, they made it musically crazy and that's the exact reason why those performances never bore. In fact Taylor and Jagger were leading while Keith laid a solid basis and went along with them. They urged him to play at his best and so he did.

What about the two early versions of the original, made before the final release? Take 1 has Keith singing while take 2 features Mick singing the chorus differently.

"Jagger was very proud of Taylor's playing. He constantly stimulated him, especially during the 1973 tour. He loved his playing, it's so obvious"

I have the exactly opposite feeling : MJ relied on MT's solo playing only when Keith was a wreck onstage. Most of the time it was "play your solo... ok 20 seconds already if he doesn't stop playing I'm gonna cut him", and MJ did cut MT pretty often in 73 with his famous "yeah yeah"'s which meant "shut up now"

My top 3 :
1. London, Wembley Arena, 1973 (Mick T. great licks).
2. Amsterdam, Paradiso, 1995 (hot Mick and Lisa , Mick good vocals, Keith at the top) .
3. Salt Lake City, Convention Center, 1989 (nice version, Ronnie was good too).
