Driving Too Fast
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France & St. Vincent, West Indies, June -
September 2004, La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France, November -
December 2004, March 7 - 9 & March 14 - June 2005 and
Ocean Way Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, June 6 - 28, 2005

Mick Jagger - vocals, electric guitar, percussion
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - electric slide guitar
Darryl Jones - bass
Chuck Leavell - piano

You can follow the road to the mountains, or the track leading down to the beach
You can go where you like, go left or go right, it's you in the driver's seat
But if the rain starts swamping your windscreen
And the lights don't pierce through the night
And the trucks coming at ya, just gonna splat you
And the highway is blinding and bright
You're going out of your brain, out of your mind
You're so deranged, you're going blind
You're driving too fast, you went straight past the curve and you’ll never go back
Yeah, driving too fast, the road was a blur and it all turned to black
Yeah, driving too fast, hang on to the wheel, I think you're gonna crash

You can see the freeway dividing, it's a pity you can't take them both
One leads to the valley or down some blind alley, the other runs down to the coast
Too many roads lead to nowhere, but how they twist and they turn
And a dead end in a dusty old strip mall, where your tires are all shredded and burned
You're going out of your brain, out of your mind
Going insane, you're going blind, yeah
You're driving too fast, you slid through the curve and ya slammed through the flat
Yeah, driving too fast, yeah, now you’ll never go back
And ya, driving too fast, yeah, it’s all turned to black, yeah
You're driving too fast, hang on for your life, I think you're gonna crash

You're going out of your brain, out of your mind, yeah
You're so deranged, you're going blind
Driving too fast, you went straight past the turn and you'll never go back
Yeah, driving too fast, you slid through the curve and you burnt up the track
Driving too fast, you're running out of gas, driving too fast, hang on to the wheel
I think we're gonna crash, yeah, driving too fast, yeah

Very good Jagger track. A bit uninspired guitar playing from Jagger though. Keith is way down in the mix with his fills. Could use an open G-guitar, imo.

ABB is an example of growing complexity of guitar weaving: Now KR and RW must weav their guitars with short fills; MJ rules!!!!!!!!! This is a solo Jagger work with the RS as sesion musicians

I mean that MJ's guitar is the prominent one in most songs of their last albums

Probably because MJ is "the last guitar hero" in the Stones....!

Didn't they license it for use in a car ad just after it came out, or something like that?

I think its a good track which never seems to get much of a mention. I like the subliminal lyric about being in control of your own destiny in life.

This is the "Jumpin Jack Flash" of the A Bigger Bang album. It's a great rocker, probably the best uptempo tune on the album. The lyrics are very much to the point / on the spot. Still, the song is not quite what it could be. One reason for this is that it would be a lot better with a 3rd verse instead of merely reprising the chorus again. Another is the bad sound of the album, which is a result of the mixing and mastering stages. The loudness of the recording which takes away from the crispness of sounds and from the dynamics makes this song sound like it was played by an old boombox even when it's coming out of a home stereo. This song, "Rough Justice" and "Dangerous Beauty" are probably the ones who suffered most from having been "brickwalled" in mastering. As an effect of that, the bass and rhythm guitar sounds toneless and hollow.

It's a could-have-been classic. They should give it a go in concert to allow people to enjoy it in its true sound.

So everybody wonders that they are not recording anymore!?
Why should they, if even a great rock track is considered
to be a "throwaway"? DTF has it all: great lyrics, great
guitarsound, great drums, fantastic slide (listen to the
outtake!), a great bridge leading to the great chorus.

One of the songs I´m proud of that they recorded it, 42
years after their start.

i don't wonder at all...they've clearly run out of ideas - at least keith has...ABB proves it....the only reason to record new material anymore is to justify a new tour and sometimes they don't even bother with that...

I am one of the few that never liked this. Generic-sounding cock rock that's on par with latter-day AC/DC. I do like several tracks on ABB, just not this one. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the track, it just doesn't do anything for my ears.

Yeah, sorry to say it's Jagger in a very structured auto-pilot. The song has no heart; no soul to it. It's just that the next effort should have Keith sitting in with Mick as he's singing the new songs...

ONe of my favourite tracks on Abb. Nothing special, I know, but it has a nice groove (maybe a bit stacato) and recognizable sound.

Mick’s warnings preached above the racket of careening …
knuckle bustin’ guitars… crashin’ tagether like crumblin’ fenders …...

Road rage rock&roll bolted tagether with white-hot-rivet-drummin’…

PLAY LOUD but beware ……….. Not for the aged or weak hearted ....

The best part of the song to me is the intro.
