First solo album in 25 years from Levon Helm, most known for his work in The Band, with Bob Dylan etc. I'm hearing good things about "Dirt Farmer," the new CD.

Has anyone been to Levon's Barn parties in upstate New York? I tried to get tickets last summer but everything was booked. A friend went recently and said it is a blast. Lots of great food, outdoors, and a lot of great music with lots of cool guests.

Levon is the real deal. His musical background is top end and he knows good music. I am sure his new release is a good one. I also liked his cameo in the film "Shooter".

Haven't seen 'Shooter' but will check it out. He also has a cameo in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - a really good film and a quirky little part from Levon. (see pic)

Great to hear he has a new album out - I thought he wasn't long for this earth last time I saw an interview with him.

Also worth checking out the Classic Albums DVD on The Band (brown album) - Levon goes into the studio with original producer John Simon and the master tapes. He's a real character and a beautiful drummer too.

I went up to Levon's on a cold November night in 2005. Soul and gospel from the Alexis P. Suter Band, Americana from Ollabelle, Emmylou Harris with an acoustic trio featuring former Dylan guitarist Larry Campbell, then Emmy and Levon acoustic, then a smokin' blues set from the Levon Helm Band with Little Sammy Davis.

All and all, more than five hours of music performed for maybe 200 people in a beautiful wood and stone room barn. Food and drinks supplied in abundance by the attendees--children, firefighters, local characters, tourists from Europe, best-selling authors and record company moguls.

Absolutely like a dream. A helluva party and one of the greatest music experiences I've ever had--all in support of a good man who has been through it all.

Get there if at all possible...
