Right before they cut to commercial on Letterman...

Paul Schaffer and his group started playing 'Testify.'

Wasn't expecting that at all!

You've got your shows mixed up, man.
Letterman hosts The Late Show.

Originally done by Parliament.

Ronnie did it as a cover, and his version is pitiful compared to the original. I am sure Paul Schaffer and everyone in his band were not thinking of Ronnie when they played the song.

what's it called when you cover a cover? there should be a word for this....

Just listened to the Parliament song. At any rate, they played a rock-sounding version of Testify.

even so, it's doubtful shaffer even knows of the ronnie version - whereas there's little doubt he's familiar with the oiginal

When you cover a cover?

I'd say 'Pulling a Rod Stewart'

A coverall?

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

A re-cover, of course. And if you suddenly discover that somebody covered if before it's a discover.

Sorry, couldn't help myself...

And neither can I ...

I believe the correct terminology is a rediscovery.

But that certainly lacks imagination ....

so I'll have to plump for:

morpho-rip-offery

I was just watching last night's Dave on the DVR.

The big story wasn't the band playing "Testify" (I'm sure they were thinking of the original, but I bet that Paul is at least aware of Ronnie's version )

No, the real notable music was just after Dave agreed to buy two thousand dollars worth of Girl Scout Cookies from a lady in the audience.

The band started playing the song "Girl Scout Cookies" by NRBQ!

Pretty obscure tune. Paul is the man.
