Just watched the DVD portion of Ya-Yas, graciously given to me by another poster on this board. Thank you very much!

Anyone know the story behind the photo shoot? Anything at all?

Were Mick & Charlie the only band members present?
How in the heck did a group of some of the most hated (by authorities) twenty-somethings, convince officials to shut down a multi-lane highway to take pictures of Charlie on a donkey?
Was it a donkey or a mule? Is there a difference?
I gotta feel sorry for that donkey/mule. Out there in the cold, carrying Charlie AND a drum guitars, etc. I wonder what kind of compensation that poor guy/gal got.

The photoshoot was on the Gravelly Hill Interchange, Birmingham aka Spaghetti Junction, the construction of which started in 1968 and which was opened in 1972, so they wouldn't have had to close it off to traffic in 1970.

I want to know why Mick and Keith allowed Charlie to be the only Stone on the cover.

Only Charlie on the cover.

The cover of Ya-Yas was a semi tribute to Bob Dylan. If you look at the photo you'll see the donkey adorned - a reference to a line from Visions Of Johanna on Blonde On Blonde..."jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule". They obviously didn't have binoculars to hand but used a camera instead.

Blonde On Blonde looms large in Stones mythology as it was apparently the album that was playing when the Redland bust happened in 1967. It also proved a big influence on Jagger's post Satanic lyrics helping shaping such social commentary songs such as Family, Jigsaw Puzzle etc.

The cover shot must have been taken at another time. The weather was freezing for the DVD photo shoot and Charlie is wearing short sleeves on the GYYO cover.

Wasn't the cover photo of GYYYO taken in early February 1970 in London ?


MrFrias,wearing short sleeves for a shot cover isn't a big deal you know ...this is the everyday prize for being a top model ...

Anyhow,it/this was the 1st vinyl I've bought & the 1st Stones "vinyl cover" I had between my hands ....I was amused by Charlie sitting on the donkey (sorry,but I've always heard about Charlie Watts and Jack the donkey )but most of all confused /moved by the back of the vinyl cover ....



I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .
