Beelyboy,

Of course, your comments are welcome, as they are always thoughtful. Sorry if the topic indicated it was limited to Gazza.

Its not out here until next Monday...aargh. I'm tempted to download it until then, but I'm gonna resist the temptation. Heard 3 songs on a BBC radio interview with her last week and it sounded really good.

Still think she should have included 'Jailhouse Tears', though...!

Oh man! Sorry, Gazza -- available in Austin yesterday..

Yeah, I like "Jailhouse Tears." But how about "The Knowing" going from being the title track to not being on it at all?

Can I step into the club? What's the cover charge? LOL Just wanted to say this came in my Amazon order yesterday with the new PERFORMANCE DVD. Have yet to play it (Had about 10 CDs in the box) but what I've heard already - 2 or 3 songs - made me buy it. So far I'm VERY impressed......OK, I gotta leave, The smoke from Beely's Hash pipe is making me DIZZY.....

I'll have to get that one, I bought her Fillmore live album some weeks ago, after reading Gazza's posts about her, but have been so busy lately that I haven't been getting around to check out her other albums, but I really like Lucinda's rough voice and songs, great woman

Then again, knowing how middle-aged women feel about aging and the way they look...maybe not so strange. By the way, can Gazza (or anyone) recommend stuff from her back catalogue. I only own "World Without Tears", which I really like.

ROCKMAN, yes, I heard you guys now have planes flying in...but seriously, The WEST CD was just released YESTERDAY in the USA - a week later than OZ, no?

Get 'Car Wheels on A Gravel Road'. One of the best albums of the last decade - and just recently re-released in a deluxe edition with a live CD. You may thank me later!

I think World Without Tears is one of her lesser recent efforts, myself. You should enjoy the Live at the Fillmore album though.

Good pic. Yeah, the cover is an Annie Liebovitz pic from 2001.

Theres a pic on Rocks Off of me with her 3 months ago when she played in Manchester. I got to chat with her for about ten minutes after her show there. She's incredibly charming, down to earth and very funny.

Not sure Helter release dates are often all over the place...
West is on Lost Highway but pressed in Australia thus the earlier release...

Just got it, and only one listen but..

Sounds a little sleep-inducing to me. Lots of slow songs and not much kick. I'll definitely listen to it some more, but starting to fear Lucinda has gone a little "LA songwriter" on us. Got the same impression the last time I saw her wherein she played some of this new disc. Like to hear get a little more blues/country bite back in her stuff.

Basically, everything she's released has some great stuff. However, definitely start with Car Wheels. Of the newer stuff, I prefer Essence to World Without Tears. Of the older, the self-titled album "Lucinda Williams" from about 1988 is really good, but she has totally tranformed her style between there and West. The earlier stuff is much more traditional folk/country/alt-country. Great songs, but there's more story and a bit less poetic imagery and depth of feeling..(but still some, of course)

I've met her and I would agree with you about her personality. A couple years ago a friend of mine went to one of her shows here in L.A. and brought some of his cds to have her sign. He ended up getting backstage and hung out with her for awhile. She was a bit drunk and was actually hitting on him and ended up giving him her phone number. He called her about a week later and she remembered him and talked for awhile over the phone, but he never took it any further.

The Best Buy version has 2 bonus tracks with demo versions of Where Is My Love? and Rescue.

The self-titled one is a gem, but unfortunately its recently been deleted. She had a few label changes around then. Hopefully Lost Highway will reissue it at some point.

fascinating to me that lucinda and the producer decided to keep her DEMOS for master vocals, (rather than "chase the demo" in the studio)
the immediacy and honest reality of those vokes were retained...
that takes big balz and major production vision, sensitivity/sensitiblity...no?

...got the essential soul of the natural intimate performance...
then built around that...instead of building 'up' from rhythm track, toward more overdubs and eventually lead vokes...

from the little i've read, the producer then went on to session the musicians around already existing vokes (and maybe lucinda's guitar too, if she was playing while demo=ing this new stuff)...

i have only heard two songs, but they were stunning, moving...stopped everything else in the world...purty powerful. "learning how to live" man...
sigh, exhale...
and 'are you alright' (which rockman mentioned)

of course before the 'modern era' in recording technology, all the classic great were doin' it all live, then mostly live in bits as four tracks built up slowly...then 8...i could feel the reality of it...

a lot of these effin' records nowadays, regardless of genre, or quality of artist, often sound like there's zero air or ambiance or reality in the room to me.

the production story behind car wheels is also purty fascinating...
it was like a war for her, with herself, her label and the various studios/engineers...
...but, i agree with all the cool comments here, CW a real masterwork of delicacy and raw emotion...

Her live gigs are great too. Love the private recordings (many of them in outstanding quality) better than the official Fillmore release

I'm a big fan of Lucinda too. Had heard all her new songs from show boots and was a little nervous the album would be too much of a downer. After 3 listens, I gotta admit, I think it is excellent. Won't be for everyone..as it is not a "happy" album.....
