Ideal Still Life Set

This topic I have to credit to THE JOKER. (his post on why was Midnight Rambler not played in 78, 81, or 82. I always thought it was weird that IORR was not played in this time period either. Both American tours were good, and the European Tour was almost there with it sister tour, and 78. But I always felt around YCAGWYW the show sort of lost the excitement or feel. I may be just to impatient to listen to a concert carefree for 2 hours, but w/e. I think there were a few missed opportunities on this tour song wise, and besides the above two I have four more I feel should have been played in 81 and 82.

01.) Slave (After Hang Fire?)
02.) Get Off Of My Cloud (As the first song after Little T&A)
03.) That's How Strong My Love Is (rotate with 20 Flight Rock or just replace it)
04.) No Expectations (in between Waiting On A Friend and Let It Bleed)

IORR would obviously be with the rest of the war horses, and Midnight Rambler should have been before YCAGWYW like in 89/90.)

They also never should have dropped Tops and, even more so, Down The Road Apiece.

they never "dropped" down the road apiece, per se - it showed up in the set off and on during the tour

None of those songs would fit in the 81/82 tour IMHO.

Out of the 4 songs you mention there are 3 SLOW songs. MJ would have thought : "won't work in stadiums"

I really thought the 1981 tour set was fine.
If I had to wonder, I would say they missed a real opportunity to play Rocks Off in a really great way...
The horny section would have really made that a barn burner.

Oh well.

I don't think Slave would ever work live.
Isn't it played on the Four Flicks extras?
Its lifeless and limp.

The studio version is King there...

I don't see how that snippet in the Flicks doc can be used as an indicator as of how Slave would have sounded live in '81
Anyway, I agree that the set worked very well. Still I think Down The Road Apiece should have occupied the Twenty Flight Rock spot on a permanent basis
Also, I would have liked them to have tried out Summer Romance

Down The Road Apiece was played 5 shows total 1st and 3rd show. Then three more with the last performance being the filmed night at the Meadowlands. I never understood why the original film was called Rocks Off even though it wasn't in the set. Very miss leading. I am under the impression this would be a no, but while on the topic of this film, where can I find a better version of When The Whip Comes Down (mixed for the film) than

this?

IORR would have sounded awful! Like She's So Cold did - it would have been a total mess. Slave would have been a total wreck!

This is just amazing that this kind of thing would be thought of for that tour - possibly their worst!? They did some different things for the Bang tour that really fell flat and it's very possible such a similar thing would/could have happened. I think what they did do for the Tattoo You tour worked great, with some kind of momentum (if that makes sense) from the Some Girls tour still in place - fast and dumpy.

I may be tired, but I don't understand what your trying to get at...

Okay, I just like contributing to all these threads, especially the ones I started. I don't think slow tempo would matter though they have slowed down numerous songs, and sped up just as many. Examples slow: Get Of OfF My Cloud (75/76), IJWTMLTY (90 onwards), and I'm Free (69). sped up: Miss You (89/90), IORR (any tour), JJF (any tour), Let Me Go (81/82), Down The Road Apiece (81), Angie (any tour after 82), Let It Bleed (81/82). There are many more examples, not everything needs to be LP tempo.

I don't think they've done a better tour since 81, if you look at the early 70s as a zenith, the mid 70s as a slow spiral down 81 was the highlight on the way to '89 and beyond.

I would argue '99 and '02. Performance wise '99 (and my preference blues wise) '02 energy and number of songs played. '03 was sorta toned down and 7 or 8 songs played a few times in '02 were never heard again. IE Heart of Stone, Hot Stuff, Torn And Frayed, Undercover Of The Night, Beast Of Burden, Shattered, and Sad Sad Sad,

Beast Of Burden and Shattered were both played in 2005-2007.

The 81/82 world tour was the beginning of stadium rock and subsequently the band lost the intimacy they had in the 70s when they could play slower numbers like You Gotta Move, Sweet Virginia, and Fool To Cry.

disagree about the song slave .i think this song would be killer live ,with a great sax solo by bobby and a killer guitar solo by ronnie and keith .this song would be a tour de force .

I was referring to 2003.

Problem only is that Keith and Ronnie lost the ability to play killer solo's, Charlie is not near as groovy as he was in the 70's, Wyman is gone, Preston is dead, and they use synths for percussion sounds instead of a real percussionists these days. Leaves us Keys, and he can only dream of ever sounding like Sonny Rollins…
