Artie Butler kick started his song writing career
by teaming up with Leiber to pen Down Home Girl....

The Coaster recorded it some 2 years later with slightly different lyrics..

Artie Butler claims that Leiber's original lyrics carried two final verses
that were dropped at the time of recording.....Butler said part of the lyrics were

"You say you don't eat pig-meat, baby but I know that ain't for real
I seen you at the barbeque and you ate up everything but the squeal"

I like Bill's bass on this one. And it's a great bit of early Stones arranging - nothing particularly complicated or difficult in itself, but every bit placed exactly right to serve the song.

This song set the Stones a million miles away from the pop of The Beatles, The Who and everyone else in the UK charts at this time. It was totally authentic southern country soul with a nice helping of r'n'b on the side. Yep.

Shame they (never?) play this live, I think it would sound good with the post-'94 Stones...

they played it at Hyde Park '69, as Barn Owl mentions. A nice choice for that unusual set.

A great song, one of my favorites from the classic period.

BTW, is there a good sound quality version of this song anywhere? Not that I mind it much (in fact it kinda fits the swampy atmosphere), but it's probably one of the worst sounding Stones tracks, probably because a higher generation tape is being used...

A slinky, swampy masterpiece, this song is the early Stones doing what they do best. As much as I love Jagger's vocals on this one, it's his harp playing in the middle and the outro that really sends chills up my spine. And that six-string bass, baby!!!

Flawless and timeless.

is the "six-string bass" on this track a stand-up bass? I thought bill & keith had to co-operate a stand-up bass on "Ruby Tuesday" because neither had big enough hands to play it themselves? But here bill does play one? Was it a special Chess-sized model?
