I remember watching this skit when it was shown live. Some funny stuff! Charlie barely kept it together a couple of times.

I'll pass for now as I am getting season 4 (78-79) of SNL on dvd for xmas. Can't wait to finally have one of my favortie performances in my possesion. Beast of Burden, Respectable and Shattered from that show are very polarazing performances , people either love it or hate it. I think you can tell I feel about them.

the greek diner skits are hilarious.

Charlie looks like he's about to laugh the whole time. Except for one time ... and I love the look on Charlie's face when the cook takes a bite out of his sandwich.
It looks like genuine disgust for a second... then he remembers it's just a comedy skit.

the whole skit was completely ad-libbed - it was not originally in the schedule...they had to scramble at the last minute because Ali canceled late as the host....

Huh? Ed Kotch was the host, I've never heard anything about Ali being scheduled and canceling.

As far as the skit being ad-libbed and not in the schedule, never heard that either. I do know that there were several scenes cut from the show because the Stones (Keith!) could not deliver their lines at all. As the week of rehearsals proceeded, the Stones -- for however many days they were there for the rehearsals -- became increasingly less 'reliable' in their performances of both the planned sketches and their musical numbers.

Mick was not sick, his voice was 'shattered' from coke.

A few of the skits were attempted during the usual dress rehearsal, and then cut for the telecast. I have seen video footage of them at a collector's apartment. Rough stuff.

What a classic! Of course the band had been trying to beat up the SNL team for days prior to shooting the live show, yet it was The Stones who seemed to suffer the most via the vocal difficulties. A few too many lines?? Either way this was top end tv. Despite the fried vocals, the live performances from the Stones were IMHO top end. Pity Keith and Mick missed the parody on The Billy Goat. Ronnie and Charlie with the SNL gang though nailed it. The look on Charlies face when Dan ate a bite of his burger is priceless. Would love to see video outtakes from skits.

Ali was definitely the scheduled host - the ads leading up to the show all featured him, if you'll recall. koch volunteered to host as a last-minute replacement. as to the larygitis, i don't know the exact affliction - but it wasn't just mick - as the rehearsals progressed, it became clear that other stones were suffering from some "ailment" as the week progressed....

Did Ali not going on the show have anything to do with the stones writing lyrics about her in Starf*Cker?
