What an incredible song with an orchestral wall of sound. Or do you think the original version is the better?

I just listened to Metamorphosis while in the car a couple of hours ago. I have always liked that version of Out of Time, as well as the rest of the album with a couple of exceptions.

I believe someone on another thread recently mentioned that the Stones urged the public not to buy it, that the quality of the record was not up to the Stones liking.

that wasn't Metamorphosis - it was Stone Age
(i sure hope i've remembered that right this time! i promised i would)

Recently, I read Flippo's book (very good by the way) and he mentions that they were pretty displeased with it being released and did NOT want people to buy it. There was a comment that Bill had put together the "Black Box" collection and Klein ignored it.

It was also being released on the eve of the '75 Tour and they were not thrilled about that either.

That is my recollection of how Flippo decribed it in On The Road With The Rolling Stones. I do not remember if they went so far as to take out ads expressing their displeasure, but they might have.

Chris Farlowe's version uses the same backing track thats on the Metamorphosis version

i don't doubt that they were less than thrilled with Metamorphosis (like with other aspects of the Klein settlement)
but the adverts were advising the public not to buy Stone Age.

here's a thread that includes the advert against Stone Age
and also corrects some misconceptions: [www.iorr.org]

Thanks--interesting thread.

sssoul--you have a real talent as an archivist. I mean that as a compliment.

Ironic they were so dissatisfied with the choice of content and cover design for "Stone Age" that they did that, but yet the choice of both for "Rarities" was obviously not a problem.

Fair point, but it was not the same Rolling Stones.

The cropping out of Bill was pretty low rent and kind of shameful.

Otherwise, I love that picture, which ,I think is from the Respectable video.

Ronnie's cream colored strat with the rosewood neck is a thing of beauty.

need to finally hear these versions of 'out of time' and others...and am ready to...frankly, because of the sad butcher-job 'metamorphosis'-version of the wondrous 'memo from turner' track, i've often thought this something to be wary of, never listened further or took it seriously. i've always wondered what barely hidden gems or whatever might be here...but had been scared offa further listening or caring...i was actually kind of offended at the neutering of the turner track...and just went on auto pilot unconcious 'boycott' i guess...but i would like to listen to all of this stuff now.

The UK Aftermath 2002 Remaster (which is longer) is the best release of the song to date, in my opinon.

It's the same name and the principle should be the same. Their quality control department when it comes to caring about what is issued under their name has been MIA in the last couple of years, especially in terms of the content of releases that they obviously havent listened to but have left to others to assemble

Correct on all counts. However, it would hardly have been a stretch to use a different and undoctored photo of the four of them

It is worth it for:

Jiving Sister Fanny
I Don't Know Why
Going Down
Family
Downtown Suzie
Memo From Turner--think it is the only official release--I like the boot better, but this is ok, too.

Plus it is in SACD.

Of that particular version?
The one that appears on the Performance soundtrack (and curiously on the Rolling Stones Singles Collection) is the real one, the proper version, the one used in the film which it was specifically created for. And it is a superior version to the one on Metamorphisis.

ps, If You Let Me is another great track...

Gazza--I agree with that is what they "should" do, but, for whatever reason, and it's a mystery to me, they don't.

One would think that some like Mick who can be, from all accounts, very hands on, would take more of an interest, but clearly he doesn't--would seem that his apathy is the result of either not caring about the "past" or can't be bothered because he knows that there is not enough money involved.

I wonder if the cover is kind of a "taunt" to Bill because, they EASILY could have used another photo--he has only been out of the band for 13 yrs--lol

Don't Lie to Me and If You Let Me should have been on my initial list.

Just listened to the 2 versions of Memo From Turner; the Metamorhosis version and the one from Singles; the beauty of an iPod...

Anyway, I like them both; but, I recall reading that Ry Cooder is on one (maybe both?) and that one has Jimmy Page....

The Metamorphosis version, to me, has got to be the one with Page--I would think, judging by the guitar playing.

I doubt that the other four had anything to do with it. I mean, having the four of them - as they look now - does NOTHING to help sell records!

There is a short, but pretty cool, acoustic guitar solo in the middle of this.

Anyone know who it is? I am pretty sure Mick was the only Stone involved in this version and it does not sound like Keith.

I was thinking about this....The only thing is, do you think the
decision to remove Bill didn't come from the "highest levels", so to speak....

Have a hard time believing that this decision was made by someone at Virgin.

Most of the early/mid 60's songs on Metamorphosis arent performed by the Stones, but are demos of songs for other artists written by Mick and Keith and featuring various session musicians. Generally, Mick and Keith are the only Stones on these recordings. I dont even think Keith is on that version of Out of Time. it's probably Page on that one, although theres other guitarists too

Al Kooper is on guitar on the Metamorphosis version of Memo From Turner, with the rest of the Stones (minus Brian). Page wouldnt have been doing all that session work by that stage in his career (November 1968). It sounds to me like Ry Cooder on the solo version, although if I remember right, I remember seeing a BBC interview with Jagger in 1985 where he mentioned that Stevie Winwood played most of the instruments on that recording.

Mabye not.

If it WAS the band's decision, maybe it was their own vanity than than a shot at Bill - I don't think they care one way or another about Bill anymore.
