Story from Black and Blue Sessions

Hello fellow Stones fans,

I've been coming to this website forever but this is my 1st post. Anyways, I'm a huge Ryan Adams fan too. His bandmate, bassist Chris Feinstein passed away yesterday. I've been reading some of the tributes his friends have been posting and it turns out Chris was a huge Rolling Stones fan. One of his friends posted this and I thought it was a cool little story from the Black and Blue sessions that I've never heard before it made me smile and thought I'd share... Perkins only played on a couple tracks right??

Oh those many nights I was lucky enough to share with him, as the Guinness pints poured. One of my favorite stories he ever told me was about doing a recording session down south in the same studio as Wayne Perkins, who played guitar on the Stones 1976 record "Black and Blue."

Chris, you see, was as big a Rolling Stones fan as you would ever meet. Listen to this story he told me.

"I heard that Wayne Perkins was in the next room," he said. "And Black and Blue is one of my favorite Stones albums. So I said, 'I have to meet this guy.' He came out into the kitchen area to pour himself a cup of coffee and I started talking to him about the Black and Blue sessions. He said he went to Munich, Germany and as he walked in the studio Mick Jagger was walking out. He said, 'Mick, how will I know where to play on the tracks?' He said that Mick said, 'Just listen to them, and imagine where I won't be singing and play there.' The result was Black and Blue."

Man I am shocked to hear this guy passed away. What happened???

That's a funny quote from Mick.

Chris was found dead by his girlfriend in his apartment in NYC yesterday. Nobody seems to know exactly what happened except that he was in horrible back pain and struggling to deal with it.

I met Chris in 1986 when he played in the Questionnaires and I played in Government Cheese. He was one of the warmest and funniest people I've ever met. We had a lot of laughs together. I can't believe he's gone at all. I'm kinda numb. I got the phone call about noon today about it. It's so sad that I can't put words to it. He touched a lot of lives. Not to mention he was a great and totally natural musician.

I just don't get how the good ones get taken so soon.

Fighting back tears,

Tommy

Hi RKH and welcome her !
Your story reminds me another one about Wayne Perkins that was posted on a Black and Blue thread .I'll try to find it.

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Intriguing.

Anyone else have other odd facts / stories from the Black and Blue sessions?

Wayne Perkins lives in my home town, and would occasionally make the odd live appearance, but is battling poor health these days and does not make it out much.

One story from this period he loves to tell is, between Stones sessions Keith was frequently at "The Wick" jamming with Ronnie. One day, he found himself exploring the gardens outside Ronnie's place with one Anita Pallenberg. Anita, not known for being subdued, said to him "Wayne, the Stones are European you know so they all take it up the ass? Do you take it up the ass, Wayne?"

After a shocked, slack-jawed, silence, he confirmed his booty as "outgoing mail only".

Not a really revealing tale, but hilarious nonetheless. Anita surely was just doing her bit to be outrageous. Or was she......??????

Wayne tells a weird story about being auditioned for his "look" before he ever touched a guitar. If I can find it I'll post it.

I'm probably not the only one to have this "evolution" with the WORRIED ABOUT YOU solo:

1) I thought it was Ronnie.

2) Then I learned Mick Taylor sued over his contributions to Tattoo You, so assumed that included the WORRIED ABOUT YOU solo.

3) Only a couple years ago (maybe here) did I learn it's Wayne Perkins.

(Great work, like the Hand of Fate soloing.)

Lester Bangs' bitchy proclamation could have come straight from the internet. Poor Lester missed it.

Interesting about Wyman crediting MELODY to Billy Preston. Doubtless thinking of the credits he was due himself.

Interesting, didn't know it had been finished in NY in 02/76, that article should have specified that "Cellophane Trouts" aka "Cellophane Trousers" and "Back to the Country", with added vocals and a bridge, originally sung by Keith during the sessions, was used for Undercover in 1983.

I guess some PR for Undercover I'd read about wasn't entirely true, "All new sessions, no archives dipped into!" meant to differentiate it from the patchwork Tattoo You.
