Bowie rules out Glastonbury gig

David Bowie has denied that he will join U2 on the bill for next year's Glastonbury Festival.

Bowie played at the second Glastonbury in 1971 and press reports suggested he was considering an offer to return for its 40th anniversary next year.

But his website said: "Sadly, there is absolutely no substance to this story."

Stadium rock band Muse could be on the line-up, though. TV host Jonathan Ross said Muse singer Matt Bellamy told him the band were "probably doing it".

Muse appeared on Ross's chat show on Friday and Ross relayed Bellamy's off-air comments about the festival via Twitter.

The band headlined the final night of Glastonbury in 2004.

They will play stadium shows at Wembley and Old Trafford next September and bass player Chris Wolstenholme recently told NME that they also expected to play summer festivals.

A Glastonbury spokesman was unavailable for comment.

U2 will headline Glastonbury's first night on Friday, 25 June, a booking that has sparked passionate debate among the festival faithful.

Some have welcomed the news that one of the world's biggest bands will appear, while others see them as pompous and past their peak.

Speaking in September about the anniversary, Mr Eavis told the BBC: "The expectations are really high. So we have to deliver on that. We're trying to get the best headliners in the world."

Bruce Springsteen, Blur and Neil Young headlined this year's show, which was recently named best major festival at the UK Festival Awards.

Next year's sold-out event takes place on Mr Eavis' dairy farm from 25-27 June. No other artists have yet been confirmed, although US crooner Andy Williams announced that he will be performing.

Really sorry but I don't dig Glastonbury because it's mainly rich people from London going for a beano down to the west country so they can tell their fake friends which bands they've seen that year.

No offence meant to those who are rich and live in London and are Stones fans.

The Stones were supposed to have played in 2007, but the payment they wanted was too high: 1 million £.

Will they ask less this year or?

Can't help but think that BV is in the know about something and is dropping us hints. I had a separate post about Bowie being asked to do Glastonbury that was in today's Daily Mail taken down at lunchtime and it was then merged onto this thread. Very interesting.

I definitely think they'll do it eventually - maybe 2011 - but June 2010 just seems a bit too early.

Apparently Bowie has been asked to come out of retirement and headline Glasto next year. That would kill off the Stones playing there if U2 and Muse are the headliners. Report in today's Daily Mail in the UK.

He's issued a statement on his website saying he's not doing it. Never was.

Rich people? I assume you've never been to Glastonbury?

There might be a few media types posing around and only attending so they can impress their fake friends but the vast majority of people are working class people who treat it as their summer holiday. They are there because they love music.....and they're willing to put up with five days in a (possibly muddy) field to hear some!

I'll be there again and hopefully the stones will too......

Rolling Stones, Spandau Ballet 'to play at Glastonbury's 40th anniversary'

London, November 29 : The Rolling Stones and Spandau Ballet may take the stage next year at Glastonbury's 40th anniversary festival.

The bands have been in touch with organiser Michael Eavis to make their debut at Worthy Farm.

'Glastonbury has had some problems over the past years with JAY Z and then not selling out, but next year is going to be the best yet,' the News of the World quoted a source at the farm as saying.

The insider added: 'It is the 40th anniversary so everyone is pulling out all the stops. U2 have signed up, MUSE are getting ready to put pen to paper and now the Rolling Stones are in talks to headline.

'Spandau Ballet will be another good get and they'll definitely get a plum slot on the bill. Michael's a huge fan.'

The revelry takes place at last weekend of June, lasting 3 days.

I recon this will be proberbly The Stones last chance for a big performance as a group and with all their energy and crowd pulling power.

They are going to go on for years in some form or another as Chuck Berry and other Bluesmen have, but as a large crowd puller and for them all to be in good health this could be the last chance.

well, Depeche Mode have been around for nearly 30 years, so they're not exactly in the same 'new big thing' category as Muse would be.

Muse dont do anything for me, personally, but they're obviously pretty huge at the minute if they're able to fill stadiums that size.

Muse are probably the best band of my generation, even tough their latest "Resistance" album has been a bit of a letdown. Let Matt Bellamy play that guitar and he'll show you!

By the way, I've seen Muse live twice, and even if they are really good people like Stones or Ac/Dc are still on a totally different level.

True I've never been to Glasto but would make the effort if the Stones are going to play. I understand though that it's sold out already. Oh well.

There will be a few additional tickets going on sale in March next year though obviously they aren't gonna be easy to get....

Rumours re: this are cropping up everywhere.

Mr efestivals seems to know something - and he was the guy that got the Isle of Wight news:

I'm seriously starting to think that there might be some substance to this.

In which case - Huzzah! I've got a ticket.

Don't know who Muse is.

Likewise....actually, I heard of them, but never heard them...that I know of. Could they even draw 500 people at a club?

They wouldnt be talked about as a possible headliner if they werent a huge draw.

They were the first band to play the new Wembley Stadium - and they filled it twice. Thats over 150,000 tickets.

I would doubt that the Stones would be able to do that at the minute.

Well, bands like Depeche Mode and Radiohead can fill up Stadiums over & over again and I certainly don't know who their fans are, (or how anyone can like their music for that matter), probably part of the generation gap between me and my son.

Love Depeche Mode! Yet another example of fine British music one-upping anything the US ever has to offer!! I'm not a fan of Synth-Rock, but I do like them very much!!

The main man at the efestivals Glasto forum posted this today

someone is telling me - supposedly from a good source tho I can't verify that or what he tells me - that, at the moment, the Stones haven't agreed to play. Everything is apparently in place, and the stones have said they'll give an answer one way or another soon.

If the Stones are playing, I believe they'll play on the Saturday and not the Sunday, as Eavis has supposedly said that Sunday is "a young person's band".

It's part of the thread two posts above this one.

I would be suprised if they said yes but life is full of suprises so who knows

The offer is in their hands now. It is a matter of a signature. I think we will meet at Glastonbury this summer. Slane Castle was muddy. Glastonbuyr will be great, rain or shine.

they opened for U2 this fall and were very popular...bernard's band was saying good things about them too a couple of months ago.
