I like it, a bit. The quiet part is so....eh..."gentle English", but the part where the drums and bass and everything comes in, is good.
I liked it at the Dick Cavett Show 1972 video

all right......Its a long journey from Elmore James to the innocence of''Í am waiting, but the R&S find the right mood here via folky acoustic guitars and Brian Jones dulcimer. This is the young Stones at their most convincingly romantic, making pop that explodes into moments of yearning. Jagger s lyrics are unusually obscure, erupting during the chorus to fine melodramatic effect-Mick sings in embracing, soothing tones, and shows rare restraint during quieter moments, followed with burst of emotion. IOORR....

I love it!! It has a folkish style I can't nail down (the verse parts): is it appalachian?? American Indian??
This is the kind of song that set them completely apart from the Beatles' and their influence of the day.

I don't hear IAW as 'innocence' exactly, more an emotional or spiritual experience that happens to resonate both as a timeless song and as perfect a snapshot of its era as Beggars, Exile, or Some Girls were of theirs...I'm struck by the yearning and anticipation mixed with anxiety and a tinge of dread. "Like a withered stone / fears will pierce your bones....Oh yes we will find out."
Or is it winter storm? (I think its withered stone)

Great song.

I recall a radio documentary on the Stones in the early 70's--they played it when they talked about Mick and Keith jailed during their '67 drug bust.

Also used to good effect in the film "Rushmore."

For me, this is the quintessential song of agony and uncertainty by the Stones. It is the voice of the question that we always ask ourselves: when will someone come out and notice me, love me, care about me, worry about me? It feeds upon our basic human need to be, well, needed. It tells us we can't hold out on our own for very long - we need the support, the knowledge that others are there for us. It's about so many things, it's about love, it's about just having assurance that things will be alright.

I love this song even more because of how surgically it was used as Max Fischers sort-of "theme" in Rushmore. When I hear this song, images from that film pop up in my head, which are exactly the images I think the Stones intended to evoke from this song.

It's encased in time: it sounds like 60s Stones. It's a perfect 60s song, it's a perfect melancholy song. I can't get enough of it!

And the fact that it's on probably their greatest early album, Aftermath, makes it even better.

JJK you articulated what I was trying to say more fully than I could, and it's an all time fave, intimate, haunting, scary

Rooster, I thought you meant "book"! Well, your brain is a book, too.
I really like Ride On Baby, from the after-Chess-but-before-JJF-years, that's one of my favourites, but I think you started a thread about that one, some time ago.

I think it's "winter storm," not "withered stone." Though that would be a nice self-referential touch...

For me Aftermath is the way up to the peak of songwriting
which in my weird mind occur 1967-71 (with some later
heights like around 1973, 77-78, and later).
Wonderful album no matter if its UK or US issues.

According to the ever-reliable bv at [www.iorr.org]

Lindsey Buckingham covers "I Am Waiting" on new solo album
Fleetwood Mac frontman Lindsey Buckingham performs an acoustic cover of “I Am Waiting” on his upcoming solo album “Under The Skin,” which is set for U.S. release on Oct. 3.

Should be a good version. Lindsey has some great ballads on his last solo album, 1992's Out Of The Cradle. There is a little info about the album here: [www.amazon.com] They should be posting 30 second sound samples pretty soon.
