28 Years Ago Today

On July 13, 1978 I saw the Rolling Stones for the very first time. It is still a show that cannot be topped. Van Halen and The Doobie Brothers opened. The Stones were red hot from Let It Rock until Street Fighting Man.

The Superdome re-opens 25 September. I don't see the Stones filling that place again, but the arena next door has already seen a sold-out concert.

Yeah, the days of 80,000 and 87,500 are probably over. The Steel Wheels concert sold out (55,000) in three hours in 89. I saw McCartney at the smaller arena in New Orleans and it was wonderful.

Only 55,000 tickets for sale in '89?

8,000 floor seats instead of 25,000 in a GA setting.
Also, the stage was a lot smaller in 78.

Erik pretty much answered this question. In 1978 and 1981 you could sit behind the stage. These areas were closed for the SW tour due to the massive stage.

of course, by lowering the ticket prices, this would not be a problem . . .

because the Katrina victims would buy their tickets with government checks!!

they could have done 80,000 in 89 if they chose to, they were slated to play jfk in 89 not the vet, but had to change for jfk being unsafe structure

The show was great in the Dome and the fans were intense. The ticket price - $18.50.

$18.50 to see the Stones in 1978, and the gas in my 1972 Oldsmobile land barge I took to get there was $1 a gallon. Today gas is $3 a gallon and tickets are.....whoa, wait a minute!

Just imagine...comparing my first show to my last show, I was 12 years younger, paid $50 less...took the RTA in cleveland...

Voodoo lounge - first album bought first day out, first show (Cleveland), $50 show

aBB - last cd bought ( at walmart nonetheless, because the meijer advertised sale did not have abb available at 1201 tuesday morning when it came out; last show (Columbus), $115, drove 150 miles,

I guess BtB was a good transition: just listening to the Jan 17 98 MSG show - Keith is on top, Ronnie is having fun; Charlie's leading the band; Mick - what's up with his voice? He sounds sluggish. Interesting to hear Might as well get juiced live for the first time. I'd like to see a non-techno version replace BOMH for the rest of tour.

Ever since this show was mentioned I actually dreamed I was there....but wasn't. Who played first? Was it Van Halen or the Bros?

This may be impossible, but does anyone have a set list?

Van Halen played first. They were almost an unknown band outside of LA at the time. I believe their third song that night was Running With the Devil...you could see people saying, "oh yeah, we've heard this one."

I'm soooo envious - imagine hearing them playing "Let It Rock" right in front of you *sigh* I could die a happy man!!
