Intro to Bitch and Live With me
Date: June 27, 2006 08:08

Recent studies performed by stones fan show the intro to bitch and live with me are very similiar. Did they get a little lazy while thinking of new material? Me thinks so

The intro/horns for Bitch have always reminded me of "Get Ready" by the Temptations (1966) and the theme from the musical A Chorus Line (1975). Anyway, it's a pretty catchy little riff.

The only similarity I hear is that they are both in the key of A.

I wouldn't say similarity but affinity. But that only lies in the fact that they come from the same forge and like all stones riffs are made of a few restricted basic rhythms and intervals. The Stones are masters of the small form. Paraphrasing Ian Stewart: they're three chord and ONE THEME (with variations) wonders. Didn't Keith say that at base all the songs are reinventions of the one and same?

It's only lately that they have become lazy. Compare the riffs of It Won't Take Long and Infamy - that's not affinity but a plain rip-off.

Not only are they in a different key, and total;ly different riffs, but also arranged and produced differently.
LWM builds form a Bass line, adds drums and has a guitar hittinmg sycomopated punches with some riffing. On Ya-Ya's they do basically the same but hotter with one of the guitars playinmg the Bass line./
On Bitch you have a tight arrangment of guitars, bass and drums and horns. Another big diff is that on Bitch the drums hit the punches together with the band, where as on LWM they are holding the beat.
I think your statement makes so little sense that I can say it is actually wrong.
And who has been performing these studies?

I agree they are distinct riffs until I listen to them on Four Flicks...then they're nearly identical.

Might be wrong, but aren't they both in A?

LWM's riff is built on a A mixolydian, Bitch on A minor pentatonic

At least, this is what I always thought! But I am not exactly the mr. theory man!

Both songs are in the key of A and quite honestly I don't see how they are similiar beyond that. Could you elaborate regarding these "recent studies"?

Liddas, you are not Mr. Theroy man? You knowledge of music seems pretty good to me!

Isn't the studio "Live With Me" in D? That's the chord the guitar plays, I think, regardless of the tonality of the bass line.

The opening riff for Live With Me is in E penatonic (E is the relative fifth of A) if I remember rightly. (I could better confirm this if I had my guitar with me!) And the first chord you here as Mick starts to sing is a D9 (relative 4th of A) and then the next is an A chord. It then alternates between D9 and A until the chorus which is E, G then A.

Bitch on the other hand begins on the A chord and then hits D to C (da-DA!) Then for the chorus goes to D, C A then goes to D, E B (Again if memory serves. I don't have my guitar with me!) With all that in mind I can see no real similarities other than the key of A. Anyone else care to chime in?

...and that was what I was responding to. Your comment that the intros to the songs were similar begged comment and I and others obliged. What exactly were you expecting? So far you have provided nothing to substaniate your view other than the above which contributes nothing to the discussion and is the only thing moronic thus far written in this thread.

I don't follow you ryan. The bass lines are very different to my ears. Could you elaborate?

im not an expeert. im just saying like when you listen to Bitch the beggining goes "duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh- duh- duh. well, we all know that riff, and that riff is played throughout the song over and over. so maybe i guess i should have said riff instead of bass line.

I feel sorry for all the people that actually took time and effort to offer a thoughtful reply to this post. Apparently, he just wanted everyone to agree with his cheap shot at some marvelous songwriting.

No need to feel sorry texas fan. Despite the retort the thread's subject is interesting and started up for the most part an interesting discussion. The authour it seems was unable to substaniate his view.

Both these songs bore me to death. I really don't know why. Live With Me has that climax, I like that. But otherwise, strange as it may be, they're dead boring to me.

Hmmmmmm, really? They don't appear that way to me. Where's that great seer of all things Stonsian when you need him? One hopes that he is playing his guitar!

What i'm trying to say is I believe the rolling stones were lazy while recording Sticky Fingers and just used to intro from Live with me. Countless sources prove me right, including keith richards himself.

The observations thus far posted here do anything but substantiate your view and you have thus far not pproduced a link to any of "countless sources" you mention including the alledged statement from Keith. Are you able to do so?
