Listening to all my bootlegs those last months, i wanted to know
on which show, did the STONES were at their highlights for this song.
There are so many awesome versions, the longest one from Hyde Park,
some from the 1975-1976 World Tour some from the 1989-1990 World Tour, some from the 1994-1995 World Tour,
and of course there are those fantastic versions from the 1969 US Tour.
Definively, i think my all-time favorite is the one they played at Baltimore on November 26th, 1969,
because they never played it like this after.

I like very much the MSG versions from 1969, but Baltimore to me is amazing!

I know by that time everybody was sick of it, but I think MSG 2002 is excellent. I love the way Jagger sings each chorus differently.

I like that one,but nothing comes close to the Ya Ya´s.

Less the singing but more the performance,riddim...makes it special,
without edits and overdubs...

Baltimore 69 is fine but I too must go with the two solos at the end of the song on Ya Ya's.

Agree with you ShortFatFanny, this 1975 version is a good one if you take care only of the way they performed it
For Ya-Ya's , i dont want to mean that it's not the best, but maybe because i've too much listened to it, i feel a little bit bored of it, i'm not jokin' i'm serious!
When i've started to re-listen to all my boots with new ears (Never listened to some of them since years), my vote goes to Baltimore because of the solos which I think are not better than the ones on Ya-Ya's but are more amazing.
Anyway, it's not because i'm a little bit bored of the Ya-Ya's version that i don't like it , it's my # 2 that's all, but during yeaaarrrs it was my # 1.

Keith plays two wonderful solos, which were unfortunately edited down for the official release of this performance which was released on Flashpoint. I think the mix on the live album isnt as satisfying as the broadcast too.

The one from Ya Yas is pretty hard to beat too, in fairness.

The best versions from their later days are Vegas 11/22/97 and St.louis 12/12/97. Most other versions are garbage.

Can't pinpoint one single live rendition as being the 'definitive live version'
The soloing and singing on the 69-70 ones are hard to beat
Love the groovy and messy versions from tota as well
...the ones from later years have - unfortunately - been nothing but a waste of time

One single live rendition only is a crime I agree ! There are so many as I wrote.
You're right for the rest .
What i like with THE STONES, is the way they had to play in different ways their songs during their World Tours.Sometimes you have this feeling, wwooowww, awesome version better than the one i've heaRd on the last show, but unfortunately, it's not true for the latest years IMO, only for a few shows...

Don't know really. There's some nice versions from the VL Tour. But it's probably from either 69 or the 75-76 Tour. Hard to choose from the groove of 69 or the great percussion-filled versions from 75-76. Also the version from the Sweden club gig 02 is cool.

Yes! The un-edited Altamont version would be the best (soundboard would be brilliant) !

And an un-edited/non-overdubbed MSG '69 (from Ya Ya's) is right up there also.

but until I hear any of these in their raw entirety then i have to say I'll stick with the overdubbed Ya Ya's version.

Hyde Park version is in the top 3.

I don't think it is the whole version on Ya, Ya's. They take out a verse.

The Love You Live-version is awesome, but the Ya-Ya-version is the best , imo.

That is one of those questions that the anwer might differ from day to day... Now when I'm listening to that clipped '75 version it sounns as wonderful as it can get - but for different reasons why it was so great, say, in 1969 or in 1990.

Over-all, I think there are great intersting different versions of it from 1968 (Rock&Roll Circus remember!) to 1990. A great interesting development of a song. Fom the discipline and the 'original' guitar arrangement of 1969 tour to the wild 'postmodern' reading of 1975/76. Then, in 1989/90 it was brought back home - to the original BEGGARS-style piano-lead arrangement. The reason for myself being not a big fan of "Vegas-Era" is not to due to the many inspired performances of the 1989/90 tours - especially by Keith - when they were using a new concept (then), but the very repition of the receipt or concept then created. What has happaned to "Sympathy" ever since is the worst example of what I think to be seriously bad in Vegas-Era Stones. Somewhere along the yaers the band has started to sound like a karaoke band with all the worst Vegas-show manouvres - it is emberrassing, actually. It's their song and they can do whatever they want to do with it, but there should be a law to prevent them to perform this song. Do "My Way" instead..
