Stones are great, but not lyrically like their adversaries
Date: April 26, 2006 07:27

Everyone, first thing i'm new here. I love the stones so much, saw them in Phoenix on November 27 last year. Probably my second fav. band of all time next to the mighty beatles. The stones just lyrically don't do it for me like the beatles do. Stones can rock, but their lyrics aren't up there with the works of Lennon, McCartney and even Dylan. You all have to somewhat agree, it's just not amazing like the beatles.

Listen to Yellow Submarine and reconsider.

At the same time, if I ever listen to 'SOL,' Sparks Will Fly or Oh No, Not You Again, i reconsider my own position . . .

"Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
That call me on and on across the universe..."

- John Lennon

Mick could never come up with something so simple and meaningful as this line.

I dunno. I agree the Beatles are a great and amazing band with so much respect. However, lyrically I would say the Stones are better. Compare the early to mid sixties. Compare Obla di obla da (something like that) to You can't always get what you want or Gimme Shelter to...well, anythign by the beatles, or anything by any of the solo beatles. look at paul mccartney now. especially driving rain. crazy lyrics that make no sense. Look at mick's last solo album. Very good lyrics.

Here we go again on the Stones vs. the Beatles.

I too am a big Beatles fan, but the Stones are just as great, including in the lyrics department. Dylan beats them both in this category, by the way.

As far as simple and meaningful, how about adding socially responsible too:

"the trick with fruit was kinda cute
I bet it keeps your pussy clean"

"make up your mind, 'cause I gotta go"

I agree that the Stones isn't as good lyrically as many others are. But who rocks like the Stones? Nobody. I love the Beatles too.

Maybe not, but that line is about simple sonic effects in the lyrics.
You native speakers always tend to chew on the fictive bottomlines...
Feel the groove, the pace & the subtle 1-3 2-4 1-3 2-4 rhyme pattern...

"Hello everybody, I'm new here, I love the Stones so much I can hardly describe, but they just don't do it for me."

How queer.

Tell me which messageboard you come from so that I can spam it under the name MickKeithCharlieRonnie.

Hope you've had your fun.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me
(who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(woo woo, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
(who who, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
(woo woo, who who)

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
(who who, who who)

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
(woo woo)
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
(woo woo, woo woo)

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
(woo woo)

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo woo
Woo woo

those are great lyrics, not to mention that's it's a grade-a, kick-ass song!

Stupid post, like comparing apples to oranges, AGAIN!!!!!!!! I know you're new here but we've debated this ad nauseum over the years. The fact is, the Beatles lasted less than 7 years and the Stones are still producing and touring after 43 years! No comparisons need to be drawn.

No I don't agree at all JPGR. Even though I am the biggest Beatles fan.
The Stones (or Jagger-Richards) are generally not much interested in surrealistic poetry (except for some psychedelic/bad trip images like in Sister Morphine for inst.), like McCartney or, more so, Lennon were so good at.
I am not qualified to label their thing accurately but I'd say it has more to do - in what I consider their best material - with cynicism and politics.
In the cynical and dark humour dpt, how can you beat the last verse (sadly cut from later performances) of She's So Cold? Brilliant!! Not sexist, just... HUMAN!! Yeah, probably dylanesque...

In the lyrics department, the Stones are probably the most underrated band of all the bands that get stuffed into the 'classic rock' genre, and beyond.
Why, I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with Jagger never ever being taken seriously until, perhaps, the day he croaks.

Edited to say that people here actually SHOULD give a monkey's @#$%& about Stones lyrics, but don't.

Dylan is ahead of just about anyone when it comes to lyrics. Lennon got a little poetic at times and wrote some great lyrics. However I think the Stones lyrically are far better than the Beatles. Unless you are looking for little cute pop songs about love. As posted above, Sympathy for the Devil was one of the best songs lyrically wriiten by anyone.

"Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye" - Brilliant?

I like the Beatles too, but they are not invincible either. This argument (Stones vs. Beatles) is so 1965!

Here's a "cute little pop song about love", Yer Blues written by John Lennon....

Yes I’m lonely wanna die.
If I ain’t dead already.
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

In the morning wanna die.
In the evening wanna die.
If I ain’t dead already.
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

My mother was of the sky.
My father was of the earth.
But I am of the universe
And you know what it’s worth.

I’m lonely wanna die.
If I ain’t dead already.
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

The eagle picks my eye.
The worm he licks my bone.
I feel so suicidal
Just like Dylan’s Mr. Jones,

Lonely wanna die.
If I ain’t dead already.
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

Black cloud crossed my mind.
Blue mist round my soul.
Feel so suicidal
Even hate my rock and roll.

Wanna die yeah wanna die.
If I ain’t dead already.
Ooh girl you know the reason why.
