OT: McCartney European Tour

Paul is coming to Europe with his amazing live band and something like 38 songs in his set list. I´m going...thumbs up

New European Tour Announced Including Paul's Only UK Date In 2009

Following a massive tour of the US this summer, Paul McCartney today announces his first European Tour since 2004. This December will see Macca play seven special arena shows across Europe, culminating with his first ever public performance at London's O2 Arena, which will be his only UK date of this year. Other firsts on this tour will include shows at Berlin’s O2 World venue and Dublin’s The O2. Paul's legendary live performances are a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience. The audience gets to re-live some of the greatest moments in music from the last 50 years, many of which have become the soundtrack to living.

Paul commences his tour in Hamburg – a city he is very familiar with. Incredibly, it's now 49 years since The Beatles historic visit, which created rock folklore and put Hamburg on the map as a musical Mecca for hundreds and thousands of music pilgrims over the years. This will be Paul’s first time back in Hamburg (as well as Arnhem, Cologne and Dublin) since his 2003 "Back In The World" tour. Meanwhile, the people of Berlin will get their first Paul McCartney concert in 16 years, since 1993's "New World Tour"! December will take Paul back to Paris for the first time since he played an intimate club show at the Olympia in 2007.

London's O2 Arena will host Paul's final show of 2009 where he will bring the year to an end on a high. This will be his ONLY live show in the UK this year! Paul’s last UK show was a massive sellout concert at Anfield Stadium in 2008. At the time the Liverpool Echo wrote, "If Anfield had a roof, Macca would have blown it off." The O2 Arena does have a roof so it’s set to be a massive night of excitement and rock n' roll Macca style! Although this is Paul's first public performance at the O2 Arena he is very familiar with the venue. In 2004, before the O2 Arena was up and running as the world’s greatest music venue, Paul used the Millennium Dome (as it was known then) for rehearsals for his massive stadium "04 Summer Tour" which ended with Paul headlining the Glastonbury Festival which has gone down in rock history as the greatest festival moment ever. Although his rehearsals at the Millennium Dome were meant to be top secret, he was soon rumbled when a near by resident complained about the rock n’ roll noise upsetting his cat!

Speaking about the tour, Paul said: "This is my chance to bring our current show home to where it all began. Starting in Hamburg, ending in London and rocking everywhere in between. I'm very much looking forward to ending the year on a high."

What a year 2009 has been for Paul. He kicked it off by teaming up with Dave Grohl to perform "I Saw Her Standing There" at the Grammys, where he was also nominated for two awards. In April, Paul performed in New York at the David Lynch Foundation's benefit concert, "Change Begins Within". He was joined on stage with Ringo Starr for a special finale. Paul also headlined the Coachella Festival (his first US festival appearance) and performed a show to mark the opening of The New Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a gig which sold out in seven seconds, setting a new sales record with tickets selling at a rate of 600 a second. July 11th took Paul to Halifax, Nova Scotia for his first ever concert there, which took place on the Halifax Commons. The mayor of Halifax described the show as the largest and most exciting concert in its 260-year history.

Following Halifax, Paul embarked on a five-week tour of the US; 'Summer Live '09'. The tour commenced with the inaugural run of shows at New York's Citi Field Stadium, which was the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles made history in 1965 when they played a concert that set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show. Critics hailed the Citi Field performances, seen by over 120,000 people, as the concert experience of a lifetime. The tour concluded in Dallas on the 19th of August.

For those of you who won't be able to make it to one of the European shows this Christmas you can re-live the Macca magic with 'Good Evening New York City', a multi-disc CD/DVD featuring performances recorded at New York’s Citi Field from Paul's 'Summer Live '09' tour.

Damn! I would go to Berlin, I would so much, but I have another concert on this date. And all other destinations are too far away. If he would only add some dates - 7 is really not too much!

No destination is too far away if you really want to see a live band. I´m getting tickets for four shows...

You are right stonehobo in a way, but there is the question of money of course. Like I was considering London, but I would have to fly there and to get a flight now with the return day 1 day before Christmas...that is really not chap. And it is pretty much the same with all other destinations. It is a pitty... Vienna would be great. Or Prague - even better. Berlin would do, but as I wrote, I can't go there on that particular date. What a stupid coincidence.

But I can see some long gaps in the schedule, so there might be some possibilty of adding some dates. We will see

can we assume there will be UK/European stadium shows, next summer?

I don´t think so. This is basically the US-show (captured on an upcoming live album/DVD) he now takes to Europe, because he hasn´t played here for a while. At the moment he´s not doing big tours - and I don´t think he will ever again. There is no need to do 100 shows. He just relaxes and gives concerts whereever and whenever he wants to - he keeps himself and his band in shape.

I saw him at CitiPark this summer, and it was incredible! He rocked!!! Played for almost three hours and no one was sitting the ENTIRE show! Phenomenal! I highly recommend it. His band is cracking! He pulled out a few really cool gems as well. Mrs. Vanderbelt, Day Tripper, and several from Electric Arguments (his best solo disc ever!). I wish I could see him in Germany, that would be incredible. I am in Hamburg for work in November and their is no way I can get back there in December:-( ENJOY!!!

Great news!

However it will be tricky getting tickets for these shows as there's only seven announced although he could have more planned. Maybe he'll do a few more in the new year, or a handful in europe next summer as adrian suggested...

It's hard to tell, because as stonethobo says, he isn't doing long tours anymore. But I would be very surprised if these are the only european shows he does during 09/10.

He's rumoured to be doing four or five south american stadium shows in April.

Anyway, fingers crossed for London tickets! It is indeed a fantastic show and nows the time to see him if, like many, you never have, and want to catch him just once before he hangs his hofner up.

Assume nothing, and avoid disappointment.

One show in the Uk is pathetic and the O2 is a crap hole. The seating at the sides is so high up you're not part of the concert - and no doubt the front 50 rows will be long sold out to friends, family, hangers on, press, record company execs, sponsors, personalities etc etc...
Glad I'm not a big McCartney fan.

WOW!!!
That'll be awesome. 3 of these 7 shows are in a maximum distance of 400 km. Hope to get tickets for one of these shows. Maybe some X-Mas shopping in Paris.

Top tickets for london £125, pre sales tomorrow. I'll be having a lie in. Too pricy.
He was great at the Roundhouse a few yrs back (£20) and i'm sure it he'll put on a great show, but i'd rather bu6y the Mono Remasters boxset at that price, oh I have it, the stereo one than, or the Kraftwerk box.

correct- it's a soulless shithole. Too many poor seats at high levels.
Even Chris Bonnington gets dizzy, up in the 400's section.

I would HARDLY call his Us tour this year 'massive'. I mean, maybe in gross it was, but he really only played a handful of dates. Maybe the guy's too old to churn out a 30 date tour ... if so I can't blame him. Quality over quantity and all that. But if he can I wish he would - we need you here in Nashville Paul!!!

Not necessarily. The dates on his recent US "tour" were spread out in a similar manner. As a couple of people have already mentioned on this thread, he no longer "tours" in the conventional sense.

I have never seen Macca live. Don't know if that's a shame or active behaviour of a rock-fan...

Then go and see him now, or you will regret it for the rest of your life. I saw him just once, but it was amazimg. His shows are gerat (unlike the crap DVDs he makes out of them - I wonder if the new one is going to be different, if we get a show uninterrupted by silly interviews of hysterical people going on an on about how Paul is the greatest artist ever). Anyway, inspite of that, his shows are truly one of the best.

happy, I know what you mean about his DVDS!!! I am a big fan, but they drive me crazy. Some great performances, marred by interviews and sloppy cuts. But having said that, one of the best I have every seen, is McCartney at Red Square, not that is a great DVD!!! WITH two great shows on it! Great!!!! The version of She's Leaving Home is spine chilling!!!!

I also know what you mean whitem8 - the Red square DVD is really the best officail release. The music is great and the interviews...are not THAT bad. The St. Petersburg concert is even without them. BUT what spoils this DVD is the crappy editing - cut each second or even faster. It is really hard to watch. But the music is great. Anyway, much better than all the official releases is the 2008 concert from Kiev bootleg - great show, no interviews, reasonable editing. It is my favourite Macca video.

Maybe another London show, if it sells out quick. But I don´t think there will be more than 8 shows. He did not do more shows in the US in summer. No need for him to stress himself - and end up in half sold out stadiums like the Stones in 2007.

There is (was?) also a DVD on several trackers last year It contained the Liverpool concert 2008 as broadcast by the BBC. Very good music and pro-shot images without any interviews. Yoko Ono can be seen standing in the audience (not on stage, so no worries here), most notably during A Day In The Life / Give Peace A Chance. It's a recording really worth checking out.

Bejesus - just found out tickets for London are a whopping £125 for arena seats. £55 upstairs but you might as well bring your own telescope for those.

I have a good Mcartney story. He toured in I think it was 2004. My flat was next to the footbal stadium he was playing in. I was off work that day, at about 2 oclock I opened the shutters a beautiful sunny afternoon, I hear an electric piano and singing I then got a 1 hour solo soundcheck from Mcartney through a super loud PA system it was like he was playing in the garden, although it was about 300m from the window, i could also see his head bobbing around when he stood up and sat down. I didnt have a ticket for the show but I stood around with a friend as there were bars in the street outside the stadium. Halfway through the show the beautiful weather of the day changed and there was a huge storm, the security opened the gates and about one third of the wimpy public went home, me and my friend strolled into the gig for free and stood at the front enjoying a fantastic show in the pouring rain.
There were negative aspects to living their however the nights Metallica and Phil Collins played I had to go out or risk throwing up on the carpet smiling smiley
